single hung vs. double hung windows
Comments (14)I had single hung AL frame windows in a home I sold about a year and a half ago. they were ok, even though the house was a single story ranch going out side to wash the windows was a pain... some wiwdows were harder to reach from the ground and I still needed a ladder, plus some had flower beds outside under them. that made it harder since I didn't want to tramp down the flowers. I am starting to replace the old wood double hung windows with double hung windows that tilt in to clean. I really like them I have to say it makes cleaning them very easy and worth the price to me because I hate to clean windows so much. I have never cleaned the old windows in the house I am in now and doubt if I ever will clean any of the old windows before they get replaced since its such a hassle....See MoreLarge slider vs. mulled double-hung?

Comments (13)Remember that casement and awning windows are the most energy efficient (and soundproof) because the latching mechanism pulls the sash in tight against the jam when closed. Single-hung, double-hung, and slider windows don't have feature so they are less efficient. The meeting rail is particularly "leaky". "Now I'm thinking that if we do casements, we make them look the same style as our existing windows (number of panes, etc.)." Are you saying that you would consider stacking casement windows to make them "appear" to be double-hung windows? Oh, I wouldn't do it. The mullion that connect units together is thick; you'd have one running horizontally across the center of the window blocking the view. I'd stick with casements, arranged side-by-side to fill the opening as needed, and with grills if you must. Awnings are great, too. --- FYI: We installed Enerlux fiberglass windows (about 100 windows in our 10-unit condo complex). I chose them after examining Marvin Essentials and Inline 325 casements. The windows have worked out very well. The only problem is finding someone to install them; unlike Marvin, Enerlux doesn't have dealers across the country....See MoreHomeSealed
