I find I'm constantly having to sort out what is good for the cabinetmaker versus good for the buyer. Cabinet makers love concealed "euro" hinges because they are easy and adjustable. Why would I want them, though? Apart from the look, I mean. All my house's interior and exterior doors have mortised barrel hinges, and they all work fine. I never need to adjust them. I think the suggestion that you may want to adjust your own cabinet doors on some future date is a red herring. It's cheaper and quicker and easier for the cabinetmaker. (Note: This may translate into cheaper for you or not) There's a well-respected Amish cabinetmaker near us that advertises that they use "French Dovetails" for their drawers as they are stronger. As far as I can work out, they are less attractive, reduce the space in the drawer, and have less wood-to-wood glue surface (i.e. less strong), but they are probably machined in about a tenth of the time as traditional (English) dovetails. Advantages for the cabinetmaker: many. Advantages for you: none. I know it's a trade off. The cabinetmakers time equals my money. But I get annoyed when they aren't upfront about it and try to hide behind supposed benefits of changes that are really to reduce their work and costs. As an amateur woodworker I can see some of what they're doing, but I wonder what I miss when dealing with other disciplines. For what it's worth we want exposed barrel hinges for our craftsman house. And I expect them to be perfect if I pay a custom cabinetmaker.

Nope. They're installed just above the top one, but thinking about it, I don't see why they couldn't just be installed above the hinge that would be least in the way. I did learn that your doors must be heavy enough to push against the soft closer. I have a bunch of evidently, really (crappy) lighter doors, because they're not heavy enough to push against the closer! So. I took some 2.5"w x 1/4" thick craft wood and cut pieces to fit against the back panel's top and bottom. Glued 'em in and painted them to match. Voila! Done.

One brand I handle has them. QCCI (Quality Custom Cabinetry Inc) embeds rare earth magnets in the top and bottom of the door with aligned magnets in the rails allowing them to use soft close pistons even without the pistons they would just woosh into place. Exposed hinges are mortised instead of the wrap hinges. All standard as are 1" frames but they are pricey. Shot a quick pick of a base I had in garage. Christian has a slightly different (bit complicated) rare earth magnet system and Craftmaid (with a "C") might as well. Likely a few others at that price point.

I was disappointed that Shiloh does not offer visible hinges on its inset cabinets - I had fallen in love with the look of Plain English. But now I'm glad the hinges are NOT visible! It's a smoother, speaker look, and I do remember dog hair ending up stuck in hinges in my ok'd kitchen, as well as tiny bits of paper towels that my cleaning woman would get caught in the hinges. If they're unfinished metal, they draw the attention away from the pulls and the cabinets; if painted, chipping is inevitable over time.
