Out of my element - Can I help at all?

A__'s BM and her BF are now "loosely engaged" - the upcoming baby has inspired them to house shop and engagement ring shop.

Quick update: Recall that BM's pregnancy is very high risk? She explained to A__ that right now, it's not a baby yet, it's a ball of cells that will probably turn into a baby, but might not. She compared it to modeling clay, and that sometimes it doesn't work quite right, so you wind up with nothing. He seemed to understand this, asked a few questions and carried on his way. I'm feeling much less worried about him now that they have had this chat!! Yay! Good for BM!

Anyhow, the item at hand. A__ says he is pleased about his mom and her BF moving forward in their relationship (not his exact words obviously - LOL), but he doesn't act like it to BF, who I suppose is now FSF. BM said that A__ is acting really weird to FSF lately... He's always looked for negative attention from FSF, but she said it's gotten out of hand - he mouths off, climbs on FSF after being asked not to, runs hot and cold, etc. When she asks A__ why he's acting like that, he cries and runs away.

She asked us awhile back to see if we could get an answer out of A__ why he was acting this way... We managed to get that he's showing off the get (then)BF to like him and that sometimes he feels weird about sharing his mom.

We passed these conversations along to BM, who said she would try to figure out what to do. I'm not sure what she figured out, and I was hesitant to ask yesterday in our conversation, plus what she does on her end is obviously not within our control.

Does anyone have any ideas on anything we can try from our end to help A__ adjust to the changes involving FSF? Obviously what BM and FSF do on their end is totally out of our hands, and that's fine...

But we want A__ to be happy, have a good relationship with FSF, and feel secure with the changes to his life.

All we can think of is making sure he extra-double-extra knows we love him and give him a little special attention these days.

Any constructive suggestions or ideas would be appreciated! Or if you think it would be pointless and sisyphean for us to try to help him adjust, let me know that too!
