Where do you like to buy your drapery hardware?

I am looking for new hardware to hang my new LR drapes (JC Penney Supreme Antique Satin pinch pleat, Linen color). I think I want a rod w/ the rings that have the eyelet for drapery hooks. I definitely don't want to use the clip rings, and I don't think I want a traverse rod either. I don't want anything too fancy, either, and I am trying to keep costs down. I will need 18 rings (9 per panel).

JCP just doesn't have anything I am in love with at a reasonable price ($100 or less for the rod, brackets if needed to buy separately, and rings). Nothing at Target, Macy's, Linens n Things, BBB, WalMart, KMart. So, now I am not going to look online. Do y'all have any favorite places w/ reasonable prices that you can recommend?

I did find this one place w/ somethign that I liked OK, but I don't know anything about it, Curtainrods.com. Anyone ever bought from them?

I like to make my own from a wooden closet rod and unfinished finials and brackets purchased from Lowes. I'm not sure if they have the rings anymore. The brackets and finials at our Lowes are now in the millworks (woodtrim) department since they are the ones that order them. You'll have to check both there and in the drapery department at your local Lowes since at times ours has been in that department on the strip clips hung from their shelving units. As you can see I still need to stain the rings. No biggie since you just unscrew the eye hooks from them, stain them and screw them back on. Just haven't taken the time yet.
They don't always have this type of bracket either. Sometimes more basic but still very nice.

I paid between fifteen and twenty dollars for each four foot rod, finials and brackets. Can't remember what I paid for the rings.

I love growing my own plants, so I will knock on doors and ask people for seeds and cuttings. I've made some great garden friends in the process, one elderly lady who nearly landscaped my whole yard because I offered to help her clear out overgrown yard for the plants. She had some seriously gorgeous large bromeliads that sold for $50 each at the one place you could buy them in the area. I must have gotten $1,000 worth or bromeliads and other plants from her for 8 hours of work. We remained friends and I got even more plants from her in years to come. I also trade plants and seeds with people online and off, and dig up, get seeds from, or take cuttings from beautiful blooming natives from the side of the road. I have no pride when it comes to my garden. LOL Of course, I buy half-dead perennials from Lowe's and WalMart markdown racks and bring them back to live. I also live in an apartment complex and have gotten some plants people left behind or gave to me when they moved. I also used to belong to a community garden and got quite a few free plants and seeds from there. I was just figuring how much I've spent over the past 3 years since I"ve lived in this apartment on plants, and it came out to less than $50 and most of that was fertilizer and potting soil. Speaking of potting soil, Lowe's will sometimes mark down broken bags, because they can't sell them for full price. I got 5 bags of nice, organic soil for 50% off by offering to take the broken bags off their hands for a discount. Same for plants with broken pots. I got a beautiful peach tree once for 1/2 price because the pot had split down the side and wouldn't hold water, so it was drying out and dying. But the best and most treasured seeds and plants I get are from GWers. I have such good friends here who regularly send me plants and seeds for no reason at all except they know I love growing from seed and don't have much of a budget. I always pass the favor forward or send them something I know they are looking for.

There isn't any difference in an item of the same model number no matter where you purchase it. As far as hand tools, alot of what I own are Craftsman. If you look closely, some of Kobalt and Craftsman hand tools (ratchets, sockets, etc.) are very similar. I believe the same company (Danaher) makes the current lineup for both. The internal ratchet mechanisms now look identical for Kobalt and Craftsman. (I also have an Allen brand socket set that I bought on clearance a few years ago that is internally identical to the current Craftsman ratchets.) Snap-on used to make the Kobalt line of tools, but that changed maybe 4-5 years ago. Most Husky stuff is now made in Taiwan. Not necessarily a deal-breaker for me, but I prefer to get US made tools. Some of my pliers, clamps, etc are cheaper brands, like Stanley or even no-name made-in-china.

Seeds that have been nicked and soaked will sometimes germinate within a couple days. Most are up within 10 days. How fast it blooms depends on the variety and growing conditions. i have some that have started flowering in a few weeks, others take much longer. Most varieties like at least a full morning of sun to bloom. Karyn PS: I've found that an infant nail clipper works great for nicking the seeds, even the small ones.

Just wanted to let you know I found more of the Canopy Rods at another newer Wal-Mart. I am one happy camper. The rods are a much less expensive version of a design I'd expect to see at Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardware. The quality is excellent and the prices can't be beat. I recommend anyone in the market seek out this brand. The 36 - 66" rods were $25 and the 66 - 120" rods were $31. My total for 2 of each was about $110. They are 1 1/2" diameter rods, nice and substantial too. I am simply thrilled with this purchase. It is for my "temporary" window treatment -- someday I will spring for the custom drapes I really want, I hope, and these rods might get the boot. But they look really amazing with the panels I got from Linens and things (108" long tone on tone striped damask in a pale straw color w/coupon only $20 each!! I needed 13 panels for my project). We just have so many other expenses right now, that I am proud of myself that for a total investment of $380 I have all the draperies I need to polish up my very large kitchen dining room/great room. Can't wait to get them up...

Justgottabeme, thanks for the Lowes suggestion. They don't sell the unfinished rings anymore, so I'd have to find those elsewhere. Ordering them online would jack the total price for everything up to what I cna find for everything prefinished, so I think that's out.

I went back to Lowes last night and found one set that I like pretty well. It's their new allen+roth line. They have the 6 ft fluted pole in Mahogany stain (lightest Mahogany I've seen!) w/ a square finial (see link below). The total for everything (pole, finials, rings, brackets) is around $63.00.

I went to JC Penney at lunch today. I found some Kirsh wood harware that they didn't have on the website. It's basically the same as the stuff at Curtainrods.com except one of the 2 finails they don't ahve on the website. The stain I like at the store is called Hazelnut but it looks like the Walnut on the curtainrods website (the Mahogany on the website is a lot darker than Lowes' color and the Mahogany at JCP). W/ the 20% off sale they are having today and tomorrow and the extra 10% off coupon I have for today only, the total for everything would be around $68, depending on the finials chosen. In the Walnut, at JCP, they only have 2 choices, the plain old round ball (blah! but I could deal with), and this fancy wood carved one (not on the curtainrods.com website) that is not my favorite. My end tables are mission style, and my TV cabinet is supposed to look like an old ice box, kinda Shaker-y in style.

So, I have to decide which is more important, the finial I like better but the color is not exactly what I wanted, or the color I want but I'm not crazy about the finial. Ordering everything from the website would be over $100, and I don't like the finials on there that much more to pay an extra $40 - LOL!

Never thought I'd be paying more for the hardware than I did the drapes LOL! Thanks everyone!
