I agree- it has really nice lines- with the right upholstery (and paint- I would paint the wood parts- but that's just me) it could be stunning!

Great find!! I don't know much about having pieces reupholstered, but this sofa is a very nice design. I just spent a lot of time shopping for furniture and there's a lot of schlock out there. This piece has nice, classic lines. If the price is reasonable, it's not a bad idea. I guess you'd have to compare it to the cost of buying something comparable new.

About the single down seat cushion, I'm not sure if down is best. Again, I'm not an expert, but the back and sides are trim: would a fluffy seat cushion fit with the style? I go for fluffy down cushions myself, but I picture them on full, roundish shaped pieces. Maybe someone with a more trained eye will disagree; this is just my gut reaction.

Really lovely, but not sure how to replace the broken leg. I'd do it up in all down, unless it's a well used,everyday piece, in which case all that fluffing would get old. I have all down in one long cushion on sofas and all they need is a couple of punches to go back to looking great. I'd hate it on the f.r. sofa, though. Be sure the upholsterer puts the hooks on each side to hold in place. Oh! And a good quill proof liner! If you love it and are not sure of the value, wait till you find a great deal on the fabric, then go nuts! :>).

Can you tell me if you have to go to certain neighborhoods to 'curb shop'? I live in a decent area, but no one here puts stuff 'out'. My DD used to live in an older area of Beverly Hills, where it was a real neighborhood with alleys behind the homes, and people would put out all sorts of stuff out in the alley.

Maybe I should look for a 'hood' with an alley??

What a great find! My mom hauled a sofa and chair that looked very similar to that one home from a curbside the year before I was born. It had stuffing and springs sticking out. She had the frame repaired the sofa and chair reupholstered, and kept it for the next 3 decades. The set now reside at my brother's house (they were reupholstered a second time about 7 years ago).

Wow, thanks so much for all the feedback. Honestly, I was kind of questioning my sanity yesterday and was almost afraid to post this!

Bruteses, I'm probably average in terms of strength--but once I set my mind to it I was determined to get that sucker in my van (I did pull a thigh muscle I never knew I had though!). It took me a loooong time to figure out how to get that thing off the ground and safely into the vehicle. I was just about ready to flag someone down and offer them a few bucks to help me lift it! And regarding DH--he'll be happy when it gets delivered all revamped--he just doesn't want any more "strays" in our garage or basement--so it will go directly from my parents' to the shop.

Miles, I'm intrigued with the idea of painting the trim. Would you do it off white?

Patty cakes, I found this in older neighborhood outside a lovely old victorian currently being used as a doctor's office. It's not something I typically see around here, I think that's why it caught my eye.

It's lovely! It's too bad the current fabric isn't in better shape because I think it's pretty.

I had some down chairs once and they don't hold their shape well. Every time they were sat in I had to plump the cushions to make them look nice again. I swore never again.

Of course it never bothered my husband, he never plumped them. I just wanted to mention it in case you have not had down cushions before. It bothered me, but it might not bother everyone.

That is absolutely gorgeous and will look awesome recovered as you discribed. I was thinking I'd like it better with just one cushion, so I definitely agree with that. I don't however agree with painting the wood. How sad to paint such a beautiful piece. I would think it would lower the value. But that's just me. I love stained wood.
Now as for you getting the baby in your van all by yourself I know just how you did it. Sheer determination. Once I loaded a portable basket ball hoop, sand filled base and all, into a pick up truck all by myself. No one was available to help me and it was the last day we could take anything from our sold home before closing. The only thing beside determination was prayer. And believe me I prayed like I did for our son each day while he was in Iraq, for I knew when he got home he'd want to use it.
