Simonton - New Construction v. Replacement
Comments (11)Personally, I appreciate toddinmn's comparison. What makes it relevant is the pricing of the Simonton 5500 is comparable to the Sunrise Essentials. I love my Sunrise Verde's just installed as replacements in my house, but I found this thread researching new construction options for my daughter. Her budget does not allow for Sunrise unless it is the Essentials line. The Simonton 5500 quote was comparable to the Essentials. It's silly to suggest that "it's not saying much" to offer a comparison between the Simonton 5500 and the Sunrise Essentials - which for both I was quoted approx. $10,000. That's a much more valuable comparison than only telling me that the $17,000 Verdes are better than the $10,000 5500s....See MoreOkna v Simonton v Vytex
Comments (24)I agree a brick and mortar store are a must. As we all know you can still have condensation even with an Okna, at least that is what everyone is telling me. I am very familiar with the Simonton's performance data on their website. Those performance numbers are outdated though. The updated numbers for a 36x63 are either 0.19 and 0.21.I have seen other sizes used by different companies, Soft-Lite use a 44x63 in some and Gerkin uses a 48x72 and a 44x60.Okna is vague and does post the size and states that actual values may vary depending on installation, size of window and other conditions. To say the least, air infiltration claims seem to have no set standards. Would be interesting to see test results posted by others the way Simonton does....See MoreWindow Bid-American Jewel- Northern VA
Comments (6)Thanks Sky and WoW. The gas mix- don't know logic in that. The 18" rule from floor- yes just lower sash is tempured. Most of my windows are either 34x64, 38x59, 38x67. 2 in the living room of TH are less than 18" from floor.- none else. I've read a post elsewhere regarding quality of the hardware/sash had decreased some years back (2007?)and that they had stopped carrying the brand because of these concerns. That being said, what would you recommend to be comparable but better quality in the $400-$500/window range? I'm replacing my current windows now due to fogging and the mechanics of the windows are breaking apart (i.e. some type of spring dropping out or shooting up), windows falling out of the tracks and hard to get back into tight fit where they shut. So obviously need decent frames/mechanics in addition to energy efficiency. Can you make some recommendations? Thanks again....See MoreAre MI windows decent?
Comments (85)Truly enjoying this conversation, thanks for all the info. I have large windows, a few are 83" and two are 96" high. My options are limited due to that size... I am planning to change all of them, ~18 windows damaged post hurricane Ida. Got multiple quotes, I was between JeldWen V-4500; Simonton 6500, and MI 5200. I am also looking into PGT option. But like many above, the very experienced contractor is recommending MI6200... Will probably not consider it after all above....See Moredoorproz
