After having owned some furniture from Target and Walmart I would suggest buying a used quality piece of furniture over the products that I've seen in those stores. (They usually look great at first but with use fall apart or look terrible.) I think Craigslist or any local classifieds are great places to look. You might also try some local used furniture or good will stores.

Yes...quality used furniture, which you can paint. Very much better quality for the money... Here's one I rescued from the local consignment store for about $100, and painted.

I agree, look for a good quality piece on Craig's List or in a consignment shop. I've purchased two very nice ones at local consignment places and am extremely happy with the quality. One was mahogany and the other cherry. Neither of mine needed painting, although that is an option. Another is just changing out the hardware. Good luck!

I dont know what you have access to, but I would strongly suggest a visit to your local antique stores/malls. We have so many great pieces of furniture like this in our mall (I have a few booths in it) that could easily be used as a buffet or Sideboard for sale in ours that you could easily find one of superior construction(as in solid wood, vintage, not cheapo throw away materials)probably for a lot less then you'd expect to spend.

Of course, CL is also a great option.

dont rule out the right dresser, since many of them would work as well.

i agree with the CL suggestions...but if you don't have the time or skill to re-finish a piece of furniture target (you said you didn't see anything) and ikea have nice things for low prices - i've bought from both and i haven't had any issues with quality...jcpenney also has nice and inexpensive things...
