Marvin VS Kolbe

Hi All,

I keep going back on forth on this window choice. We narrowed it down to Kolbe Heritage-Sterling and Marvin Ultimate Magnum. Double hung all wood windows (one french Casement) I probably like Marvin better but they are 2,100 more.

Would you pay that much more for Marvin if so can you tell me why since I would have to do some convincing. Is there a big difference? The one thing I didn't like about kolbe is the grids(if that is what they are called)on the outside are not wood. Need to make a decision in the next couple days!

Personally, they are both about the best production made wood window available. I would go with either and in your case you seem to prefer the looks of the Marvin and I would go for that. But you really cannot go wrong with either. As for the fact that the exterior grille bars are aluminum as opposed to wood on the Kolbe, one less thing to need to be painted in my opinion and I think they look fine.

The window order came in on monday less than four weeks from ordering altho 8 windows are on back order not sure which ones. I am assured by next Wed. latest. We are having the dealer store them for a couple weeks until roofing is finished we have been having major rain delays. From what I could see of the windows in the warehouse they are beautiful. I am regreting the unfinished interior as I will have to prime and paint. I will post pictures if I can figure out how to do it. This is after I track down the dupont flex flash and make sure the installers know how to use it. We have used Zip-Panels for exterior sheathing and are wondering if we should have used tyvek instead. All of this is so installation intensive and since I am at the mercy of the installers... One thing to consider is the dealer network in your area. For me, Loewen has only one dealer close by, and the next nearest is about 40 miles away. If the one close-by goes out of business, and I've bought from them, and I have a problem, I am now having to turn to a dealer quite far way, with no one else to go to. I believe Loewen has a strong presence in the northwest and west, so check for your location. For my area, Marvin is very well represented, so that was a factor in my decision. I am not really familiar with Kolbe. As to DF, I was told DF is stronger, but that difference will only become apparent in 20 years or so. If you are going to be painting your trim, so don't need to see the wood grain, then DF should not be a deciding factor. I'd go with the contractor I like best and who seems to do the best work.

I looked into these a year ago (also looking for a slim profile window) and from what I saw the Marvin Contemporary and Marvin Ultimate casements were essentially the same window (identical sash widths at least). The Kolby Vistalux had much narrower sashes, which gave it a more modern look. Did Marvin change the design on their Contemporary series? I guess I need to go check, but was surprised to see the comment about them being narrower like Vistalux. I hope they are as I have a Marvin dealer near by!

I think the lead time was about 6 month or 7 months when we ordered. My memory is starting to get a bit hazy. I think we ordered in July 2021 some time. We started demo Nov 2021. They left our original windows in until the new ones arrived. They arrived in waves though... probably half arrived on time, then a couple weeks later we got a couple more, then a couple more. We had one corner glass window that was basically just a frame (glass is ordered from a glass shop locally). It was not square and had to be unistalled (our contrator did all the installing). He said the windows were not perfect (they are handmade by people), but that they were better than most that he's been installing. I found a local Kolbe guy (I think he's some sort of engineer, but I could be wrong). He was really helpful connecting me to the right people and getting a fix for the not square window. Kolbe's repair guy (he drives all over the western states fixing window problem) came out and cut the frame and put it back together so it was 90 degrees. We got it installed and then the glass guys installed some window piece upside down. Ugh... so had to order new strips of wood from Kolbe which took a few more weeks. Our window shop Window's N Things in Canoga Park was good and kept following up with Kolbe. I also called Kolbe directly and they were very honest with me about how long everything would take. Overall, I'm happy with my windows. It's just a process. Good luck.

It seems though if you millworkman & homesealed both think they are equal then doesn't make sense to spend the extra money for the Marvin?? I like the look on both but more concerned with if they are both equal in quality?

I don't want to spend all this money and not get a good quality window.

It would be interesting to see the performance numbers between these 2. Anyone know how the DP, air and U value compare?

I would also recommend checking out Beechworth Windows by James Hardie.

It is a wood interior, fiberglass exterior window with great performance numbers. DP 50, .01 for air, and U values around .24

There are several contractors that are currently selling and installing these windows in STL. Please let me know if you have any questions and I wiill be more than happy to answer them for you.

I assume the air numbers are for a casement. Do you know the Numbers for the double hungs? The Beechwood website fails to mention any performance numbers except in the vaguest terms. Do you have a link to this info or care to reveal the source?

I don't think it is spam as much as it is a manufacturer's representative here to post information about a given product.

That happens from time to time and is a good thing that they are paying attention.

If he/she posts back with the technical answers that were requested in the other thread, that would be a good thing.

I can't say much more than what's already been said. Both high quality windows. The difference in price most likely is in the fact that Marvin still uses a dealer system and kolbe you're usually buying from a distributor so there's less cost added on. I actually think the exterior with the bars in aluminum is better, that would be a narrow piece of wood that could easily warp or rot over time, with aluminum you don't have that issue, once painted it's the same.

ok windows ordered!! We went with Kolbe. The quality seemed to be very similar and the price was about $2,700 less.

my husband agreed with the exterior being aluminum it would be better to have. I guess I was just concerned about the looks. We are painting the windows anyway so you are probably right you will not even be able to tell!
