Moving Question..

Hubby is up for a promotion at work. Won't know if he will get it or not for a few weeks...with the promotion comes a move for our entire family.....BM hasn't had contact w SD in like 11 mos..so it will be a year soon...Do you think we need to track her down and tell her we are moving if DH gets the promotion? Instinctivly I feel we should just to let her know but on the other hand it has been almost a year and she has not visited/spoken to SD....we have no idea where she is living etc... In our court papers there is no mention of a requirement to inform the other party of a move, and the distance is not any farther away than the distance we are now from BM....

So I am wondering if we should go through the trouble of trying to locate BM or just leave things be. BM has our cell number and that wouldn't change with the move... DH has full legal and Physical custody...

What do you guys think??

I would make an attempt to track her down just in case it ever comes up. If you can't find her at least have some sortof proof you tried. I'm sure if it's been almost a year she doesn't care but to cover yourselves looking coinsiderate is always a plus. Never hurts to be proactive.

We have an addy that I am assuming is old...maybe we could send a letter that just says notice of change of adress and make a copy of the envie...we could also send one to the courts i guess?
Just dont know how far I wanna dig to pull someone out of the woodwork after so long......

I'm not saying you'll "love" it, but yes, roses CAN grow beautifully there. It really isn't that much different from growing roses in Palm Springs/Rancho Mirage. You'll find you want LOTS of shade and deep watering. Wind breaks help, too, with the desiccation from hot, dry wind. Container growing is VERY iffy in that climate, so they'll likely be most successful in the ground. One thing you will adore...nearly ZERO bugs and diseases! The only issues I've heard of first hand from friends who live and grow roses in the Palm Springs area are due to over crowding and insufficient water. Deep mulch; planting far away from concrete walls, patios, walks and driveways; hopefully some shade from trees, particularly afternoon shade, to alleviate the intensity of the heat and OVERHEAD watering! Your more fragile roses may not survive, but you'll find HTs and floribundas to be spectacular there, particularly those with less scent and greater petal substance. What you'll be enduring is very much like Arizona and there are some spectacular roses grown in those parts. One of the members of the Rose Hybridizers Association actually breeds roses for high heat conditions. It's going to take a lot to get used to, but eventually, I think you'll settle in to a routine and have many fewer rose issues than you probably do in Kansas. Wait until you see some of the amazing things you can grow once you get there which take a whole lot less time, work and water than roses! And, they can help provide shade and interest when the roses need the help. You can grow them there with some tweaks, so don't let the apprehension get you down. It'll be a learning curve, as Kansas has been. Think of how "expert" you're going to be once this is all over! You'll be able to give expert advice to just about anyone growing roses anywhere, other than Alaska! Kim

I recently moved my hens & chicks, no problem. It doesn't root deeply and you can practically plop it down in any sunny location and get it to grow, as long as it doesn't get too much moisture. (it will rot if the soil doesn't drain well) This is the 3rd time I've moved the semps and and they don't seem to mind at all. If I want my sedums in another area I just pinch off a few pieces and stick them in the soil in their new home..the pieces root and spread fairly quickly. Plenty of sun and light soil should be all that is required. Shade and heavy wet soil will kill them.

I have actually done what you propose to do in plan B. I had moved out West and was unsure of the future, so before I left, I fostered my hosta with a friend with the understanding that should I return, I would retrieve my plants. I would gladly divide them at the time if she wanted to keep some. It worked out well...I still have the hosta and my friend is growing her own 'adoptees' . I'm grateful to her - she considered it 'no problem' - the plants required no care from her at all...I insisted she not baby them as they were a tough plant and would be fine. If you go with fostering (IMO a practical solution), work quickly on finding a receptive 'foster parent' in your new zone, dig them up and replant in foster home. If you have to negotiate, you'll have to decide how much of a hand you'll have or want to have in the maintenance and welfare of your babies in the interim...or do what I did...trust and let go for a year. Don't forget...trust Mother Nature to have a hand too....hosta grow and survive in the wild naturally. Aside from the sentimental attachment of your hosta which I fully condone and understand, this is a great solution you've come up with! Jo

You can move seedlings any time. I've moved them after one year with no problem. Most hybridizers move them after the third year. I never have any place to move them to, so most of my seedlings stay put for four or five years. That's a shame Regal Finale has performed so poorly for you. Mine is performing poorly this year because of a lack of rain in May and June, but it has performed well for at least 15 years here. In High Regard is pretty. I bet it will be fantastic next year. That's interesting that you got such a light colored seedling from Kent's Favorite Two. I like it. The lavender seedlings are nice too! Debra

Protecting your husband's reputation with the court as the responsible parent is what matters;
reluctance to do what it entails doesn't matter one bit, you just gotta do it & go on.
Not notifying a mother of where her child is moving to could bite you, & the child, in the hiney in future.

I'd check with my attorney first, but I'd probably send duplicate notices to the address I had for her, one certified, return receipt requested, & one regular mail.

yea I agree its just a shame that it Doesn't work both ways or that not seeing/speaking your kid for almost a year doesnt come back to bite you in the hiney in court!

See your lawyer and see what he suggests. I don't think you should move away without advising her if you can find her. By using a lawyer you will have proof that you tried to find her. I would not pass up the chance at a better job, but would do the legal work.

I would send her a letter to her last known address with return receipt and then you will have either proof she got it or it will come back stamped "no forwarding address" and you can show the courts that you tried but she hasn't kept you informed of her address. C.Y.A.

I agree with the group. I would send have DH send her a letter saying "As of [date] we will be moving to [new address]. Our new home will be the same distance from you as old home, and attached are directions. Even though you have not recently visited with [names of children], you are of course welcome to restart visitation. Please call me at [number] if you are interested.

I would send copies via registered and normal mail to her last known address and any attorney she has used.

I think KK brought up two good points - mentioning the time it's been since she has come around just so it's out there, and sending a copy to her attorney. If he never resigned as her atty of record that can usually be considered notice to her.
