Staining window frames

I've ordered some Andersen windows with unfinished pine interior frames, intending to stain to a cherry finish. After doing some research, I am still not sure of the method that will produce the best finish. Let me just say that I am a complete novice when it comes to staining any wood, let alone pine. My biggest worry is to end up with blotches all over the place.

I read in a book that gel stain works very well on soft wood like pine. Do you need to use a preconditioner, as suggested by MinWax? MinWax also suggests to apply a top coat of semi-gloss poly stain. It all makes sense but don't know if this is the best or most common method of staining pine.

If any of you have taken on similar projects, please share your experience and offer advise. Thanks.
