an easier way?

I know the right way to refinish furniture, but my daughter is looking to slighlty darken an oak baby changing table to make it blend in with her mahoghany colored crib. Is there an easy way just to add a layer of color besides painting it? It is in good shape finish wise. We just don't have time - or the lungs- to strip, sand, stain, etc. Thanks for your help.

Very often, DIY finishing is as much a job as actually making a piece of furniture.

There are no magic finishes, despite what the ads say.

The best way to accomplish what she wants with just adding a layer of finish is to try garnet or seedlac shellac. But, you need some experience in choosing and using it.

Not to offend the woodworkers :) but this might be a case for something like Minwax Polyshades. It's like tinted poly (maybe it IS tinted poly?). It'll obscure the grain a bit but it's not that bad (assuming you're not doing this to a lovely antique). It'll at least be a washable finish which isn't always bad when you're dealing with poop.

I have a Fiskars Pruning Stik that I prune mine with and never have to get close to the stickers. This is one tool I wouldn't be without - lightweight, so not hard to prune above your head. Pileated woodpeckers support themselves with their tails. So, he's having to reach around his back to get to the suet. They sell suet feeders mounted on wooden paddles that support the pileated. I used to have a pair who visited my feeders in Missouri. Then, one year, they disappeared. Haven't attracted any to my Indiana bird feeding set up.

You should really look into getting a rotary hammer. They are quite slick to have. My wife rolled her eyes at the price of them but they go through concrete like a knife through butter. I have the Bosch Bulldog. You will not fear concrete with this tool. Hammer drills are worthless in my opinion, rotary hammer is what you need. I would recommend renting a small rotary hammer and an SDS drill bit by the hour and just drill holes all the way around where you want to work and drill a path of two lines down the middle so you can break the block in half with a sledge and have enough room to pry the concrete out. Wear eye and ear protection. Return rentals once you are done, should only take a half hour to break up what you need. This wont be expensive and will be the easiest way. But, if you want to do this the hard way, as suggested before use a circular saw with a masonry blade and cut the floor where you want to break it up. Caution: lots of dust, concrete dust is real bad stuff, wear good breathing protection and have a shop vac sucking dust and/or run a hose to where your working to make it a wet saw. Plug extension cord for circular saw into GFCI outlet if using wet saw method. Then use standard chisel and sledgehammer.

I sit down at my computer with my transactions page for that account open, and compare it to my paper checkbook register. (you can check off cleared checks in your register with a translucent highlighting pen if you have many transactions, make all easy to spot) I fill in any withdrawals for cash I may have made but have not entered in the register and add any deposits I may not have recorded. My bank shows actual check number with the amounts, I don't know if all do. If I have check numbers missing from my checkbook that don't show online either, I may have to wait a day or two more before they show online as having cleared (DH will take checks and forget to tell me, just assumes I have enough :)). Other than those, the balance online and the balance in my book should match. I hope I didn't sound harsh earlier, I just listened to a friend rant about having to spend a whole day straightening out his wife's checkbook this weekend - she's 50 with a college degree and my sympathies for the week may have been used up. I know it doesn't come naturally to everyone and takes a little discipline, which then turns into such a time saver.

Yes, there are two ways.

1. A toner. This is finish with color in it. To be successful, it almost has to be sprayed and it has to go on lightly. Goes from not quite to too much real quickly. Technically, Polyshades is a toner, though it is miserable stuff. A friend calls it the worst thing to happen to a can. In addition, poly does not stick all that well to lacquer, the most common commercial finish. You can get lacquer-based aerosol toners from places that cater to professional finishers and touch up techs. Mohawk is the most common brand.

2. Glaze. A glaze is a heavy on pigment, light on binder colorant that you apply between layers of finish. You must top coat it with a clear coat. I often use glazes to adjust colors in the finishing process (a little darker, a little more/less red, etc.). I also use glazes as "hang up glazes" to give an overall highlight and darken crevices, making the piece appear not "sparkling new." I make or buy glazes, but some people use gel stains as a glaze substitute. It's also important to not go too heavy with a glaze because besides muddying up, too thick a layer can cause adhesion problems.

I use both of these products to kick colors in certain directions.

General Finishes brand Gel stain .... marvelous stuff!

You just have to thoroughly clean the piece with mineral spirits and steel wool, then wipe on the glaze with a soft cloth, and then a coat of their gel topcoat. it's oil-based, but not horribly stinky.
