large windows in Eichler style (50's modern) home

I want to replace the current single pane, non-safety glass in 6 openings, 67" wide and 106" tall. The frames are aluminum. I am replacing the exterior siding in the same round so this is like installing new windows.

These are non-openable, glass inserts that goes from floor to ceiling, from post to post. I was quoted $1,900 each for low-e, safety glass, installed; $1,500 for the unit itself.

It seems ridiculous to me; it is just glass!!! I wonder, do I really need a "window" as such, or can I just get the glazing unit and insert it with proper sealing? Or is the price simply this high for glazing of large sizes?

I also asked about replacing some sliding door units (with openable transoms) fitting in same dimension rough openings. The quoted price for the full unit was $4000 installed, 3400 for the combined unit alone.

Could/should I contact a commercial window firm instead? WOuld you know of a good company to contact for delivery to Northern California?

I would so much appreciate your insights and help.
