Itty Bitty Desk...adding 'character'

So many of you gave great color suggestions for the little desk we inherited from my husband's family:

I was really starting to enjoy the aged finish and was probably going to leave it that way, but my daughter decided to add to the "character" by carving her name in it with a pen:

So now it has a little EXTRA character I didn't want, and the next owner is sure to know who used it before him/her. I don't know what my daughter was thinking! Ack!

The brick on the house that my husband grew up in has "FRANKIE" etched in it. No Frankie in this family. We all like the character it adds. I suppose it takes 30 years (+/-) before one can enjoy such character. lol.

I remember doing that with a dining room chair that was "stored" in my room when not in use. My mom was pretty mad that my initials were on the back. I thought it was cool because it was mine. LOL.

Stlgal: Thanks so much for the report on Austins so I know what to avoid. My regrets here: Pat Austin (healthy but few blooms that shatters, so-so scent) - Mary Rose (annoying prickly thorns). Onederw: Bolero is also great here in Chicago area. The best-looking and best-fragrance at the rose park in late fall. The fragrance is elegant, like an expensive perfume. Now I just have to find a red rose to plant next to Bolero in zone 5a. When I checked on Mayflower and Eglantyne - there are varied opinions. I wonder if some roses prefer acidic soil versus alkaline soil. Some roses with a wimpy start might need some shade, or a jump on nitrogen. I had problems with William Shakespeare's own-root, slow, stunt, yellowish growth - until I fixed the soil: 2 gallons of peat moss with 1 gallon of alfalfa meal (bring down pH of my 7.7 alkaline soil, plus a hefty nitrogen-boost). He's now extremely vigorous, dark green, and healthy in east sun. What Michaelg wrote helped me a lot: RE: Can Roses on Multiflora Rootstock Grow In Alkaline West? I didn't read the, I think, two westerns by Robert B. Parker, nor the follow-up one you mentioned. However, I have read all of Parker's other books as well as those written by other authors after his death. I think those authors, Ace Atkins and Michael Brandman, have done a very nice job of capturing Parker's style of writing. What they haven't done, at least as of now, is move either character forward. Instead, they've just added what I will call episodes to the characters as those characters existed at the time of Parker's death. As for the new trend of a living author adding his name and some (or no) amount of collaboration to a series, I withhold judgment until I read the book. One of my favorite storytellers, Clive Cussler, has been doing this for years and, so far, I've enjoyed the collaborational series just as much as the original. I think Cussler writes rather formulaically anyway, so that probably makes it easier to make a collaboration successful. This post was edited by Fun2BHere on Thu, Feb 27, 14 at 17:21

Help. Are these Baseboards TOO WiDE??

For those of you who upgraded to taller baseboards, how wide is your casing around the doors and windows? I'm wanting to go to 5 1/4 baseboards but have the usual 2 1/4 inch builder grade casing and am concerned about the proportions and styles when mixing them. It's a simple traditionally styled home with narrow dutchlap siding and paneled shutters. A bit of beadboard was added that maybe gives it some cottage look. The ceilings are 8 feet. The floors are 2 1/4 inch golden oak. The doors are 6 panel colonial. I like the baseboard below. It would have a shoe molding. Does anyone have this combination of baseboard and door casing? Anyone who is familiar with these moldings, do you think they'll look alright together and with the style of my house? Does this baseboard strike you as formal? I love moldings but am not going for a formal look. It's possible I'd add a moderate crown, maybe 2 1/2 inch, at some point but am not sure.

Melissa, I haven't been in GardenWeb in a very long time - and even then, I'm usually a lurker in the Garden forums. We are starting our remodel on our kitchen, master bath and bedroom, so I wanted to see if there were any ideas out there that I could steal because it feels so overwhelming right now, trying to make the right decisions. Anyway, I wanted to tell you how much I love your step-back cabinet (I've never heard that term and I'm going to research it). It looks like it is a wonderful addition to all of the other great design ideas you've created. I love your style.

My dd#1 carved into my kitchen table. I was not happy at the time, but now I don't even notice it.

Oh my goodness! Ten years ago I saved and scrimped and searched antique stores looking for a formal mahogany dining room set. I felt like such a grown up after it was delivered.

Three days later, my three year old thought the dining room set up would be a perfect place to play "office". She got a piece of notebook paper and a ball point pen, had a seat at the head chair and scribble scrabbled away.

My dining room table still has an 8 1/2 by 11 inch section of very deep imprints of her toddler scribbles. I was so destroyed when it happened but eventually found the humor in it a while later.

Now we are downsizing but I really don't want to part with that table. If it didn't have the scribble scrabble I wouldn't have a second thought about getting rid of it. As a compromise, think I'll take a photo of the damage/memory and hang it in a frame with a picture of her impish three year old face.

it's reassuring to hear that there are so many other "artists" out there, none of whom have gone on to be arrested for vandalism. :)

I'd keep that adoring signature. If you ever decide on something else it can always be changed. But I can see this remaining through her college years and possibly part of her in adulthood with a family to enjoy history. Think of how valuable this could be if she became "known" in some famous environment. I'd bet there are presidents who have carved their names in unknown furniture sitting in their museums.

My husband wrote on his desk ( second hand to him)...but he did it on the inside of the drawer. we had that desk when we were first married as our bill paying desk...I never knew about the name in the drawer. I "Antiqued" the desk with some greenish paint and a couple of different glazes and our son used it. Somehow it got to my daughter's and painted royal blue with every wooden knob a different primary color for her youngest son. This summer my grand daughter was gathering furniture to move to her first college apartment, she sanded the desk down and found her grandfather's childish scrawl....and her uncle's childish scrawl.....and promptly added her own name.
That desk is now gloss black with bright chrome knobs....and 3 generations of signatures.

kdw, where did your daughter inscribe her name? There might be a way to incorporate her "artwork" into your ideas for the desk.
