New Line of LG Appliances? Anyone own?
Comments (24)jeri - I was pretty certain the 980 didn't have a tilt draw to it. Not only did I tug on that puppy pretty good, one of the associates confirmed that the draw didn't tilt. Now here's what I'm thinking,... maybe the first run didn't have this feature and later models did. That's very very possible, because see some features on our GE that weren't included on the floor model. Example,... our full width delitray has three (3) temp (produce, deli & quick chill) settings and the one on Home Depot's floor only had the produce and deli settings. There's one other difference between our GE and the one on the floor, and that's the display. Our's has six individual and exposed buttons, the one on the floor has the same selection options but the buttons are under a thin plastic membrane type covering,... sorta like the difference between LG's 950 and 960 models. So it's quick possible 980's in the pipe and being delivered now do sport the tilt feature. Makes more sense than not I'll tell ya that! So far,... so good. We're liking it alot jeri. Such a relief not having any refrigerator drama for once. Well there is one thing that's got us scratching our heads and that's a pretty noticable warping effect going on with our doors. The stainless is very waving (not dents). Kinda reminds you of a Fun House mirror. But we've been in contact with GE and they've offered to order new doors for us. Think I'll take them up on that come Monday. Oh there's one other feature that's I've learned to appreciate on the GE,... the dual evaporator and fan feautre. I say 'learned' because I really had no idea how important this feature was until I spoke to a few reps at a high-end appliance shop in our area about the model. Seems as though it's a big deal having a system that doesn't force the freezer and frige sections to share air. Apparantly most boxes in our class generate freezer temp air, and through a series of vents and ports, is able to warm the air up a little to service the frige section. The GE, along with it's corporate Samsung twin, keeps these two sections separate and with it's dual evaporators and fans are able to independently generate air at the proper temp to service each section. So the air in the freezer never gets to see what the inside of the frige looks like. It's supposed to amoung other things, reduce odor transfer, freezer burns and temp instability. Now if this is true,... then great. Will this feature have me sleeping better at nights? Nah,... not really. But I guess it's nice to know that we're sharing something normally only the big boys can boast about,... like Thermadore. In the end, I'm only concerned about keeping my beer and the kid's milk cold. So yes,... we're enjoying it. Let's see,... anything else? Nah, that's about it. It's an icebox for God's sake! LOL! Oh, Shawn wants me to include that the LG is seems more roomier to her. It's not bogged down with an icemaker in the frige section or the full width deli pantry. I'll agree with that, even though the LG is rated at 24.7 cu ft. and the GE is a wopping 25.8. The LG does seem more cavernous. There was a point when they were taking out the LG and bringing in the GE I was able to do a quick side-by-side,... and yes I'll agree. aprince - I've heard of the poor customer service,... that's been widely talked about. But you're the first I've heard to rate the LG as junk. Maybe it is good fortune that we made our final perch on the GE. I've heard other also say they used to be Goldstar, but there was another company's name that stood for the 'L' that I can't remember. Still, if I were as wealthy as you guys, I still would have opted for the 980,... it's just a good looking box....See MoreHELP! Simonton Daylight Max or Milgard Tuscany
Comments (30)Hi, I did get them. I then sold my house. The windows did help with noise, but there were a few problems: The house was almost 100 year old and had a crawl space, so noise and vibrations still came up through the floor. I could feel car stereos, etc. It had the original glass front door and matching front window that added a great aesthetic value, so I did not want them replaced. They also faced the busy street and therefore noise was still quite loud in the living room. A front bedroom also facing the street but with all new windows was noticeably quieter, but you could certainly still hear outside noise. Third, I am extremely sensitive to noise. Much more so than the average person. So what others might not even notice, I often find intolerable. Other issues encountered: Most of the windows installed did not stay open upon installation. The Brothers installers believed that the windows did not have the correct balances, i.e. the "sound package" glass was heavier than the usual glass, but that was not accounted for in the manufacturing, so the windows were too heavy to stay open. After reading the horror stories of trying to deal with installers and manufacturers, I was not going to wait months just to get the runaround, so I refused to pay the rest of the bill until they fixed the problem. Brothers was helpful, but Simonton reps were a pain. I insisted that the Brothers supervisor come out to oversee the Simonton people when inspecting and adjusting the windows, which he did. They were then fixed, but that should never have happened. Shortly after installation I found water pooled in one of the window frames. There was a ton of rain this year, so maybe it would have eventually drained/dried. I don't know, but it was a bit concerning. The light filtering properties, which I had been told were not noticeable, were very noticeable to me. The light coming in had a greenish cast and made things darker. I think most people wouldn't notice, but again, I have sensory issues. To me it felt like I was wearing polarized sunglasses in the house. I asked about it and was told it was unavoidable in the energy efficient windows. So that's my experience. I did NOT get triple glazed, so those might really cut out noise more. I personally would not buy these again just because after installation I didn't feel the noise reduction was sufficient to warrant the hassle. I will say it was quieter in my bedroom, BUT I like to sleep with my windows ajar, which defeated the purpose of noise reduction....See MoreDo quiet wall ovens exist? Comments (14)I agree with Jakvis, different people have different sensitivities to noise. My GE Monogram French Door oven in my ipinion is very quiet. My husband who is very hard of hearing hears it when it is in the preheat mode. It is a low rumbling sound that is very loud to him and sounds like a barge coming by our house. When it cools I hear it I know it has to cool things and I hear in a vague sort of way it's clearly not excessive. Now ask me about my VentAHood which only has one speed ---LOUD- and LOUD Not sure when I bought that system if they had two speed.but it is screaming loud and I can't hear anyone talking to me. I do use the self clean function on the oven and expect it to run a fan to cool things.; It really isn't excessive and well worth for the cleaning experience that I don't have to get involved with ::)) So noise is acceptible to me in many c ases unlike cilantra which tastes like soap and makes me ill where other people find it frangrant and tasty. Life is interesting to be sure. Inga...See MoreAnyone else suffer abuses from an HOA controlled by a
Comments (44)Although I have never lived in one (and wouldn't want to), I have dealt with any number of HOA's in my capacity as a landscape designer. I have never encountered any issues with them signing off on my designs. Once they have the plan and plant list in hand, they can easily verify that nothing will exceed any height regulations or expand rampantly. I even had one with a 'must have lawn in the front garden' reg (ridiculous when the entry garden area is not much more than 150 square feet!) that agreed to its removal and replanting. I'd try it. Often when presented with a professional design plan, they cave :-) It is true that many HOA's have boards that consist of petty despots who like to throw their weight around to feel important and that some of the regs are arbitrary at best. My ex moved into one like that after we divorced and after butting heads a few times, got himself elected to the board and made the landscaping regulation changes he wanted and thought others would appreciate as well....See Moremcsbldr
