Advice: What kind of cutain rod to use for long/akward window?

Take a look at my pics and let me know what I should do. I have custom made curtains that I used to have in front of another window that I moved to another one, but as you can see the window is recessed which causes some issues with regards to supporting the rod. Of course I didn't think of this at the time and proceeded to buy a new iron rod (adjustable up to 96") and move the curtain. Aside from the fact that the brackets are too far away from the edge of the window and that the rod is too long - it looks really bad. Now I don't know what to do. It's obvious I will need center support with such a wide opening, but how will I do that? Won't a center support rod look funny sticking out a foot from the window? Will a wooden rod be more sturdy?

The opening is 82" wide and about 12" deep (away from the window> I'm thinking I need an 88" rod, not including finials.

What do you think?
