I just read your reply to Lily on Sunny's post about adult skid - sofa, etc.

It brought tears to my eyes about what you wanted most - family - which is what is being withheld from you. I must say to just write this whole bunch off. You have your own biochildren, right? I think I'd just engulf myself w/ them and my patients, all of whom must be pleased to have a physician so in tune to them.

Anyway, I once pictured this huge holiday gathering - our kids, my skids, my DNs and all extended family, but it will never be. We may all be there in body, but it won't be the carefree 'easy' time I envisioned, you know? Some will always have their hands out and will hurt the others. Again, there are givers and takers. I was like you - not wanting any 'stuff' as my DH had none after his divorce and financial troubles. However, 'stuff' is all some people can think about.

I was unrealistic in believing I could make a difference: w/ the skids, it's just strained, no other way to say it....w/ the DNs, their mom was jealous and put a halt to my once unlimited involvement w/ their schools - now the boys are floundering where I once pushed them to do well - even the two w/ LDs. I sit at the sidelines wondering what I did so wrong - tried to be a friend to the skids and was taken advantage of and mistreated, tried to be step up to the plate for my DNs as no one else was willing and/or able - and now it seems as though all of my efforts were in vain.

I think you and I are a lot alike. We say we've disengaged, but yet we seem a little hopeful/excited when any small bone is thrown our way. How can two women who have worked as hard as we have, made friends as easy as we have, never set out to hurt anyone be alienated from the people our DHs deem so valuable? We did nothing wrong, other than marry these men. We didn't break up their first marriages, we came into the marriages w/ our own careers and we keep our families going w/o fail on all levels! Sheesh!

I guess I'm just going to throw myself into being the best mother I can be to my three youngsters. At the end of MY road, I'm certain my skids won't be helping me should poor health come my way. I think my DNs would lend me a hand. If my own kids won't, then I've failed them as a mother - not sure if I've failed the others or not - but at least I can say that I tried.
