Thanks for the feedback. As you can see, I am struggling with this. I do want a calm feel to the room, but perhaps I can achieve that with some color too.

I thought the jute would be good for the cats, that's why I selected it. I do have a puker in the group and figured I could just hose it off (how's that for class)if he nailed it.

They already ruined a fine area rug in the living room, with their scratching, so I hesitate to by something made of cloth. I do realize I will likely be replacing the rug every couple of years, but that's ok.

Is there any color or pattern you suggest? The kitchen that flows into the room is off-white cabinetry with ORB knobs and brownish granite. We're getting ready to replace the appliances with SS.

It's a shame you can't put a rug with a little more color due to the cats. I'm sure there are many cat lovers with similar issues who can chime in and offer suggestions!

Thanks Elle. They are really much better looking in person! I am not opposed to color, just not sure where to go with it. My husband would like a bit of red/burgundy which might work. We previously had a red floral couch so I have no fear of red!

An eggplant-y/purple-y color would be nice too. I just have to find something that works.

Sue, I remember snippets of your kitchen way back on the CF. It was one of the first white kitchens I saw on GW and was a motivating factor for me when we did our remodel.

Anyway, back to the rugs. Hosing off works fine with those indoor/outdoor rugs, but not jute. I would be tempted to get a flat weave wool rug. The one I have in the hall has never been tempting to Artie and his claws. Not sure if cleaning would present an issue. So far I haven't had to find out (knock on wood).

My first thought was red or the popular green of right now. I'd put some of those colored boxes on your shelves and put some fun accent pillows on your new couch. Add that black and glass coffee table with a rug underneath and you are ready to go!

The room is asking for blue, imo. I think this rug from JCP could be amazing in there. Picks up the wall color, has richness and an interesting pattern to hide spots from animals, and compliments the pattern on the neutral couches. I am thinking the aquamarine colorway, in case the link goes to the original brown:

Your rooms are beautiful and I love the couches. I think your room handles the 3 cushion versions very well. I really like that last rug that les917 suggested it is warm with a nice accent of color, but not too overpowering. Looking forward to seeing more pictures...you are doing a great job!!!

Wow, the rug Les linked to is beautiful and I agree would look amazing! You can't beat the price! I would go for the 8x11. Anything smaller might look too small.

Wow, I love the rug selections. So I guess my fear if adding a floral run (when I have floral couches) is not really founded.

Now, I love the blue version of that rug...I hadn't thought of blue. But will it work in my house, which has zero blue??? The only other thing is the loop construction...my babies will have a field day with that. But perhaps I can find something in that blue that might be more kitty friendly.

As for the red...that works! The old couch was made of a very tight, flat cotton fabric that was not attractive to the cats...so I think you have something there natal.

I'll check out more rugs online with your suggestions, and will post some that appeal to me later tonight. Thank you again.

Ok, ran to Lowes after work because I saw some rug colors to try. Got the runners so I could easily tote them back and forth.

In terms of colors/pattern, what do you think?? DH and I are partial to the blue on the right (Les!!). I didn't find a red I liked, so we have no red in the bunch...yet.

I am not necessarily going to buy them at Lowes, but for the $$ I could switch these out often as they get soiled and battered by the cats (I included a picture of them too).

Love the kitties and their beds ... not so much the rugs.

With the light cabinetry and sofas, I think you need a deep, saturated color for the rug -- something along the lines of the red one that natal posted. If blue, I would go towards navy, not a pale blue. Gorgeous kitties! I used to have two that looked like your two on the left. Now I've got a big yellow guy!

Your couches are lovely and so is your home.

I find this scratching post the best. I have mine strategically placed behind the back corner, by the arms. That seems to be their favorite place to stop and scratch. This has stopped them from touching the back of the couch.

They are all pretty, but I agree you need a rug with stronger colors. I love both of the rugs that were suggested...Decatur Buff is a beautiful color--I had it in my den for a few years. I think you need something more vibrant to complement the paint color.
Although, monitors can be funny...something can look pale online and be perfectly fine in person. And that may be the case here!

I probably shouldn't post since you just ordered two, but ... ours is 3/4 sisal and 1/4 carpet with a full carpet base. While Artie will stand up to scratch, he's more likely to lie prone and scratch the base. He pretty much avoids the sisal for some reason.

Natal: They do have a rug post, but have no interest in it. I hope this works because two of them just love to scratch.
I have also added sticky tape to the back corners of the coach and the front of the arms. It's clear so it's not an eye sore.

We'll see. Those little buggers always surprise me.

I've made some progress with additional furniture. Should get the chair and coffee table in 8-10 weeks. Both the fabric and the chair were on display and I loved them. The fabric has a very thin muted pinstripe of black and cream.

I am thinking of perhaps a round pedestal black accent table for between the two couches like the Pottery Barn table below. Ethan Allen has a nice one too...even saw one in Sam's club.

I am still searching for the perfect rug.

Hi cooking in rvc. Just wanted to say I love your new sofas. I am replacing our not so old Clayton Marcus with 3 cushions rather than 2. I find people don't sit in the middle of a 2 er. So even though it is big and comfy, we are losing seating space.

I like the middle runner the best of the 3 there, but I agree with others that the room is now neutral enough and needs some color in the rug and accents. I love that floral one and the red and buff oriental.

I got that sisal scratcher and my cat wouldn't touch it. Its waiting in a closet for a future cat with different habits.

This is my first draft at setting up the bookcases. This is still very much a work in progress. Suggestions are welcome/

Last I posted we didn't have all the furniture, and now its in with the exception of a side table for the lamp (that's an old one its sitting on).

We love the room although the couches really aren't all that comfortable. The furniture is from Ethan Allen, the rug, sisal, is from NaturalArearugs.com, the lamp is from Pottery Barn.

We're trying to decide if we should have the back wall of the bookcases painted a sightly deeper color than the rest. They're BM Dove White as is all the trim. The walls are Decatur Buff.

Shades are woven grass from Budget Blinds.

Sue, your room looks very nice. Love your bookcases and the colors you have chosen for the room. Looks so serene and pretty. I believe I have the same couch from Ethan Allen and this couch is definitely not as comfortable as previous Ethan Allen sofas. Haven't figured out why. Maybe cushions too firm? Looks good but not the same as the others. Looks like a nice room to be in.

I think painting the backs of the bookshelves would look really nice, but it might be better if you painted some sort of panels and did not paint directly on the bookcases themselves. It would be an easier paint job and you can always change the back colors by flipping your panels over and painting their other side.
I'd actually go a shade darker than the wall.

Maggie: I think its just not deep enough considering the thickness of the cushions.

Dianolo: Yes, I was thinking of painting poster board first to check out the look.

Ahh Loribee, good eye. I picked that pillow up in Home Goods. The chair came with a back cushion but I thought this added a little punch and it is a bit more comfortable than the cushion.

Was thinking a metal of some kind too, though I am shying away from a pedestal type since I have wires from the phone,lamp, and universal remote that I want to secure to the legs so they don't dangle down the side. I was also looking for something with a second shelf and without glass. I saw one I liked, but can't remember where!!!

I like the look of your room with the neutral colors. It looks very inviting. I would try to angle the chair a little more if there is room to do so. Love the little clock thing (or is it) that is on the wall, and your chair is gorgeous!

Yup, still around. Chair is angled based on who is sitting in it and if they're watching tv or chatting. It's moved based on usage.
