Locking garage doors
Comments (7)We have an intellicode garage door opener, which prevents other openers from opening your door. Intellicode® rolling code technology provides state-of-the-art security for your home by automatically changing your access code every time you push the remote control button. This prevents an unauthorized person from capturing the access code to your opener system and gaining entry to your garage. "Here's how it works: Conventional garage door openers are coded to send out the same fixed code time after time. A rolling code system uses a proprietary coding system that selects a new code from 4.3 billion possible combinations each time the system is activated." We do have a deadbolt on the doors leading outside from the garage (to patio area) and the one on the kitchen - and those are both STEEL doors - so yes, a deadbolt can be put in a steel door. It's important to also have your door frames enforced (ours have steel pieces running down them) so someone cannot kick the door in. A wood door can easily be kicked in. We do not leave our garage door open, even when at home. We have a huge garage with a workshop at the back and the space is heated/cooled, so another reason not to leave the door open, in addition to safety/privacy. Someone will get in a house if they want to, but you can take steps to make it harder for them. We have an alarm system and all doors leading into/out of garage have sensors as well as all other exterior doors. You can have sensors on windows too, so at least if someone manages to get in, hopefully with an alarm, they won't stay in. Of course, you need a monitored alarm system for this to work. tina...See MoreInstall a lock with key on both sides on my Andersen 400 Door ?
Comments (4)Thanks everyone for your answers/input. As it turns out, the person who installed the door did not know how to properly install the lock mechanism ACTUATOR, which triggers the standard dead-bolt lock that came with the door handle set. Because of this, the door would not lock at all! Now that we figured this out (and the deadbolt lock) does work (it locks the door) when you pull the handle upwards, it looks like there is no need to add anything else....See MoreWould you keep the sliders or change to hinged patio doors?

Comments (28)We replaced our French patio door with a slider last year (here 27 years) and we are sorry we didn't do it much sooner. It is much easier to operate since the french door was so heavy and it was a pain to open and close as compared to the slider which operates beautifully. We didn't replace it with a French styled slider, ours has minimal casing to open-up the view. It gives our room a lift....See Morekashmi
