Strange double hung windows

I have recently moved to a house that has a type of double hung windows that are new to me and that are causing me problems. They have fingerholds on the bottom rail and above those a metal hold device. To move raise or lower the window it requires a thumb to push down on both hold devices while the fingers are using the fingerholds to push the window up or down. I am finding these windows a problem and worry that they will be more so as I get older. Right now I have one I cannot reopen and have no idea what I can do to get it opened. Just everyday raising and lowering to let air in or keep rain out is a heavy two handed job.

Is anyone familiar with this kind of window? Is there any kind of maintenance that I can do to make them easier to move? Is there any way the windows could be altered to be more manageable or would I have to replace them?
