Side board top Need ideas

I'm a beginner and a looker in this site. I felt I could never do what you ladies have done. Will it's time. I think I have the courage to start. I will take pictures tonite so you may understand what I'm trying to do. I have been renovating my bathroom, I'm using an old side board with vessel and bowl sink. I have checked around for a top to protect the wood finish. Glass was $600.00 for a 64 X 18 1/2 sheet. Mable is 500.00. So thought how about cermic tile and mosaic around it. Was told not because it would break. Now I need your help. Please think about it till tomorrow when I can get the pictures. It's been awhile on how to post Thank you all you lovely ladies.

Easy smeasy. Get a piece of 1/4" backerboard (cement board from Lowes or Home Depot), cut it to fit the top of your sideboard, adhere it w/thinset, and mosaic your heart out. Welcome to the forum and to an obsessive hobby, and yes, you can do it - it's easy, and we'll help you all the way. Anxious to see pictures.

Shaughnn... I have no DOUBT that you are absolutely correct...it just sounds right to me....the problem is I'm in rural Alabama and that's not what they "do" here yet...I spoke with 2-3 contractors and several tile installers and they directed me in how I should go...I called my drywall supplier and he called it "greenboard" and confirmed it was a gypsum product..he said here most builders will put plain drywall in the tub surround and tile right on that....he said it was better that I had put the greenboard down and that definitely I could mastic right on top of the greenboard and tile there...I know you're probably cringing and saying NO WAY! But in the real world where things are done everyday and this house will likely outlive my lifetime...am I too wrong to do what they're telling me "everyone around here does?" My main concern is providing a good barrier between the tub surround and wall to prevent any leaks...I did have my tub filled to the rim with insulation (icynene liquid foam) underneath...and I plan on sealing the tub surround well with caulk etc....this tub will be used once a week if that gives you an idea....please advise (although I know you already have, but given the circumstances, need more) Tara

If you like garlic, this is stupendous! But you can always cut the garlic down if you prefer.... Potatoes Savoyarde 1T unsalted butter, melted plus 3T unsalted butter cut into small pieces 3 cloves garlic, minced 2T finely chopped fresh parsley 1-1/2c shredded gruyere cheese 1/4tsp freshly ground pepper 2-1/2lb potatoes, unpeeled and sliced 1-1/2c chicken stock Preheat oven to 375F. Brush 2qt. baking dish with melted butter. In small bowl stir together garlic, parsley, cheese and pepper. Layer 1/3 of the potatoes in prepared dish and sprinkle 1/3 of the garlic/cheese mixture over the top. Dot with 1T of the butter pieces. Repeat the layers once, and finish with the remaining potatoes. Pour the stock and then the remaining garlic/cheese mixture, dot with remaining butter pieces. Cover dish with foil buttered on one side. Bake 30 minutes, remove foil and continue baking until potatoes are tender and top is brown and crusty, about 30-40 minutes longer. Serves 6 (from Williams Sonoma) A little different, but super good.... Wild Rice Salad Ina Garten 1 cup long-grain wild rice 2 1/2 tsp kosher salt 2 navel oranges 2 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp fresh orange juice 2 tbsp raspberry vinegar 1/2 cup green grapes, cut in half 1/2 cup pecans, toasted 1/4 cup dried cranberries 1 scallion, white and green parts chopped 1/2 tsp ground black pepper 1. In a medium saucepan over high heat combine rice, 4 cups water, and 2 tsp salt and bring to a boil. Simmer, uncovered, until rice is tender, 50 to 60 minutes. Drain and return rice to the pan. Cover and allow to rest for 10 minutes. 2. While rice is still warm, place it in a mixing bowl. Peel oranges with a sharp knife, removing all the white pith. Cut between the membranes and add the orange sections to the bowl with the rice. Add the olive oil, orange juice, raspberry vinegar, grapes, pecans, cranberries, scallions, 1/2 tsp salt, and pepper. Allow to sit for 30 minutes for the flavors to blend. Serve at room temperature. Serves 4 to 6. Linda

I don't think the PAX white is the same as the Abstrakt white, although it might work anyway. What about getting two doors to total 36", and use a bit of deco strip to fill in between them or around the edges? One problem with the Abstrakt material is that it's tricky to cut it cleanly. I used the deco strips as a crown molding and the mitered edges are a little rough. See tops of cabinets in picture below - the top right corner is a mitered piece of deco strip that wraps around to the side of the cabinet. My experience with Minwax Wood Hardner is that it lasts only a couple of years, and cracks begin to develop within a few months of application. I have had better results with Abatron Liquid Wood. It is a two-part epoxy product that appears to form a permanent repair. They also make an epoxy wood filler product that is white, and you mix the two parts and apply like putty. I don't like that product, however. It is extremely light weight, which tell me that it is mostly inert filler, plus it is snow white, which would be fine if I were going to paint the repaired wood white, but I prefer something closer to natural wood colour. Something that I have found to work extremely well is to mix up a batch of Liquid Wood and then stir in fine sawdust until a thick paste is formed. It can be applied with a putty knife, and when hardened it is only slightly darker than the wood that is being repaired. I have one exterior window sill that was repaired and has gone through an entire season, with hot, cold, dry and wet conditions, and so far, no sign of cracking or a gap between the filler and the wood. I would advise priming the rotted wood with pure liquid wood and allowing it to penetrate before adding the filler. Liquid Wood is not cheap; it runs about $165 for two gallons (1 gal each hardener and resin). I can go to the local lumber yard where they manufacture doors and frames, and they will give me all the sawdust I can carry away, since that makes less that they have to clean up and dispose of.

Slow what a great idea. I thought of something like that when I left the tile place but the guy said it would not work. All I keep thinking was he just wants to sell me a 500.00 peice of marble.
Slow on the worm you made what was the mold? Dry vent to make the curve? I would like to make one for around my poud.

BEBOB: My tile store owner told me I couldn't mosaic my front walk too, but it's been there four years, and is still in perfect condition, except the second one where I mosaiced over a crack and didn't patch it first. The serpent was bought from a concrete man not far away, and he has the mold. I have seen the same one somewhere for sale - don't remember where. Make one from the wire mesh/concrete - w/be very easy.

I would just ad to Slow's comments and say that I use special screws to screw the hardibacker to the surface. The only trick to them is that you have to drill so that the screw goes all the way down into the backerboard so that it is level. When I did our drainboards I didn't use thinset to adhere, just the screws and it is not going anywhere...they sell the screws by the hardi backerboard...

Oh man no pic.
Dont listen to them! We have learned to do it and it works just great.
funny story-at work they put up some fancy tiles outside, they put down a sort of backing paper stuff and then used mastic to adhere the tiles.1 year later they are now redoing it....and still using mastic to adhere the tiles. I asked the guy why he was using that instead of thinset and he said it would last for years. The next day one of the tiles fell off he put on the day before. I took it to him and told him to use thinset unless he wanted to redo it next year.....heck maybe he needs the business! And he is a professional contractor!
