Pella vs. Eagle -- a question of quality

Hi -- We are going to replace some aluminum windows, 3 sets of French doors and a slider. We were already to go with Eagle and then I saw some Pella windows with retractable screens and blinds between the glass that a neighbor had installed. I've always thought that Pellas were overpriced and more concerned with hype, and bells & whistles than quality. The trouble is, it's those very bells & whistles (blinds between glass and disappearing screens) that appeal to me VERY much! Will I sacrifice quality by going with Pella over Eagle??? I'd also love to hear from Pella window owners re their experiences, especially with the between-the-glass blinds/shades and the retractable screens. Thanks very much!

yes, there is no doubt that pella's bells and whistles are cool. if you do decide to go with pella, understand that there may be an adjustment period in the beginning to make sure all blinds and screens work right. after that, they are the well worth having.
on the flip side, having pella with no bells and whistles is still a better option than eagle if you are concerned about quality. however, i'm not saying that eagle is a bad product.

Both companies make a quality product. If you want bells and whistles, I'd say get them, if the price doesn't break the bank.
The most important thing is to have the windows installed by a quality installer. That is critical for any window or door. They will also need to be stained or painted properly to insure long life.

Stay away from Pella. their #1 service issue is blinds between the glass. Their 2nd is the class action lawsuit that originated in Chicago. They have not made any changes to their product design to eliminate their water leakage problems. Look to the Eagle product line byy Andersen Windows they are holding up very well in my house and we had them replaced about 3 years ago.

Why don't you just contact a few dealers and ask them to come out, get some measurements, look at what you want done, talk to you about the diferent options that are available and then work up an estimate based on what you want rather than trying to get pricing on the internet? Most dealers I know are pretty honest and really do want to help you make the right choice. Why don't you give them a chance to help you?

I just installed 27 Anderson 400 Series, double hung replacement types, in my 95 year old home, and 1 patio door too. Love them. All of the subs working on my job have complimented them. I went with a terra tone finish on the outside, and they have wood on the inside. They glide very nicely, were installed really well (having a good contractor is everything!), got the screens with them too. It came out to about $700 per window plus or minus (I had odd sized windows - being an old home). Love the tilt out function for easy cleaning. The patio door was about $2500, including the cost of the hardware (6' door) and installation. It would have been more but my regular contractor as opposed to my window contractor offered to install it when he heard that it was going to cost nearly $4000 for the window contractor to do it (it would have been a special order door in that instance and I went to Home Depot to get the one I purchased instead). They have been through several heavy rains already and so far, so good.

Leaps and bounds better quality IMO. The wood interior on the Integrity is largely isolated from moisture due to the fact that it's basically a fiberglass window with a veneer interior. The pella on the other hand is wood clad in its true definition. I've seen 10 year old Integritys that look good as new, while most pro lines are due for replacement around that time frame. Try to get a look at a corner cut of each to see what I'm talking about. Price wise the integrity is probably a little more, but should be in the same ballpark. I've sold and installed both

Pella windows and doors are first-rate quality. This comes from an architect with 24 years experience and hundreds of jobs specifying Pella Windows. Andersen is the other top-notch window manufacturer. The others fall in line after that, but with not much distance between them and the two front-runners.

Eagle has the blinds between the glass also. They also have pleated shades between the glass. The quality of Eagle is equal to Pella, but may cost less in some areas.
