window help for new construction!!!

I live in eastern Missouri and I'm building a new 3200ish sq/ft 2 story house. I've been researching the heck out of windows and their website's seem to tell me the same thing. I don't know if I'm overlooking things or over-thinking thinks; but, I need some recommendations on windows.
I am looking at mostly all double hung windows and vinyl. I've been keeping Anderson in the back of my mind but been told I'll pay extra for their name compared to other brands. So I was then leaning toward Quaker windows until my contractor said he recommends Ellison. Some other brands I've been looking at are Jeld-wen, Atrium, and Marvin which are all sold around here.
I would like your input on all the mentioned brands: quality, durability, price, etc.

Marvin either Ultimate's (downside is expensive) or Integrity by Marvin. Andersen depending on the series would be in the top 5 but not near the top. What do you want the windows to look like, what stile of window, what type of material; do you want the window made from, what are you looking for in a window?

Good advice above. For a wood interior I love the Marvin options. If elite performance is on the top of your list premium vinyl should be a consideration as well... The place to start would be as MWM said to decide what you want your window to look like, your priorities for the project, etc and go from there.

I am pretty happy with the look and feel of the Aluminum Clad windows. The Integrity was bad for 2 major reasons. 1. They were unable to come close in many of the windows sizes (these windows are pretty tall, some are about 7'6") 2. The "tract" where the window moves up and down is tan or white only. I want a black on black window, the tan tract on the inside of the window is extremely unappealing. The Kolbe is able to do the black aluminum with the black painted wood interior. This house is a contemporary rancher and the exterior will be white board and batten hardiboard (cement block construction) with a dark grey metal roof. All the windows and doors must be impact for code in my area. The house will eventually see for about $800,000 (so I cannot spend a million dollars on windows) and the windows should be great quality, but not best quality. I also have 8 sets of french doors. Spending $100,000 on windows and doors does not make me feel great.

Hello Jbrig - Great question. The finish choice may be influenced by your location. Coastal applications usually require the 2605 finish but people throughout the U.S. may request the upgrade if they want to be assured of extended longevity of the finish. Seeing that you are in upstate South Carolina, but not knowing exactly where, the 2605 finish may be a wise choice. You may have already seen this, but for reference, I am providing a link to our clad colors brochure PDF, There is a table on the back page with additional information on coastal weathering and the differences between the two specifications: AAMA 2604 and 2605 Information In addition, here are a few more details about the paint system that I hope will help with your decision: Windsor factory applied heat-cured painted finishes are durable and very colorfast. The Super Durable Polyester TGIC and Fluoroset® resin-based paints block damaging ultraviolet rays of the sun and repel general air pollution. They will not whiten or pit when exposed to dew, fog, rain or acid rain and will retain their color and gloss level for many years, based respectively on meeting AAMA 2604 or 2605 specifications. However, to assure that they retain their original beauty, even these highly durable finishes should be cleaned occasionally. When selecting a cleaning solution, use mild soap solutions and avoid using strong acid or alkali cleaners as they may damage the finish. We definately need a lot more info.Why 3 cooktops in total ,I can’t read the measurements is the WIC actually another pantry. More info and more importantly where is your architect? I think designing windows is part of the overall design so I would need to see what the style of house is for sure.

You also have to check the local code requirement for windows being this low to the floor and might need to have tempered glass. R308.4.3 Glazing in windows. Glazing in an individual fixed or operable panel that meets all of the following conditions shall be considered to be a hazardous location: 1. The exposed area of an individual pane is larger than 9 square feet (0.836 m2), 2. The bottom edge of the glazing is less than 18 inches (457 mm) above the floor, 3. The top edge of the glazing is more than 36 inches (914 mm) above the floor; and 4. One or more walking surfaces are within 36 inches (914 mm), measured horizontally and in a straight line, of the glazing. That being said, you might not have room for a transom, depending on how much the soffit will drop on the outside and how much room you will have left. Good luck

Thanks for the replies! We definitely want good vinyl, double hung windows. With it being a new house, quality is very important. Energy efficiency is next important, thinking possibly argon gas between the panes. We are considering a grid pattern in the glass in some windows and would like input on blinds inside the windows as well.
Overall, I want good windows that are going to last a long time (the windows in my parents 26 y/o house are in great condition and want the same for my house).

If you are thinking vinyl, the often discussed and highly regarded brands are Okna, Soft-Lite, Sunrise, and HiMark.

Each of them have new construction options and can be shipped to just about any location.

My home is not due for windows just yet but I did put the Okna window in my Aunt's home.

She loves them and I wanted her to have what I think is the best in her home.

I'd agree with windows on Washington regarding the top choices. They are all in the same top tier of quality and performance so you won't go wrong with any of them, but I also personally favor the okna/HiMark. I do have them in my own home :)
