Noise - Double Glazing enough?

I live in Shanghai, China which has weather similar to Tallahassee, Florida (it gets a bit hotter in the summer and a bit colder in the winter here though). I recently bought an apartment in a poured concrete building on a relatively low floor (14th) very near to a train station and over a busy street. In my current older apartment, I have two sets of windows with about 6Â¡Â± in-between them; double glazed on the outside and single on the inside and it is very quiet. Is so much glazing really necessary to keep noise out with the modern products available today? If I have to spring for 2 sets of windows I will, but IÂ¡Â¯d rather save the money if possible.

I live on a street that is busy for the morning rush hour and evening rush hour. With the window open it is really loud. When I moved in it had a single pane sliding door and it was somewhat loud. I replaced it with a dual pane sliding door with laminated sound control glass:

and now it's okay. If I had to do it again I might have gone with triple pane windows or argon gas filled windows as they are suppose to be even quieter.

Hmmmm. Is your slider the kind with a fixed panel on one side and can tilt or slide or just a regular slider. I know that the sliders with the tilt function create a better seal when shut. I also hope someone can comment on how much difference a fixed panel as opposed to a window that can open makes for noise reduction.

Based on what you've written, I think that I will definitely still need to consider doing two sets of windows in the bedrooms at the very least...and will probably stick with dual pane glass elsewhere in the apartment. Now I just have to try and figure out how to say "laminated sound-control glass" in Chinese!!!

I'm sitting by a first floor double glazed window with a heat pump right below it as I type. I can certainly hear it when it runs. Although it doesn't bother me, it might bother others. The heat pump is only a couple of years old and isn't a particularly noisy unit. The outdoor unit is best located where it is shaded most or all of the day and its sound won't bother anyone. If necessary, it can be shielded from the sun with a small fence or some shrubbery. I assume from your screen name, you don't need to worry about snow blocking any air intakes. :-)

I'm using a standpipe in the sink cabinet with a Miele Optima and don't hear any significant drain noise. The use of a standpipe with domestic dishwashers is allowed under 2006 IPC 802.1.6. Note that IPC 802.4 requires the distance between the trap weir and the top of the standpipe to be between 18 and 42 inches. This means that the drainage under the sink cabinet cannot be to high. It probably helps if the hose outlet directs the flow onto the side of the standpipe interior. I use a washing machine hose U-form hose retainer to hold the Miele hose in the needed shape. The trap needs water in it to seal the sewer system. If the dishwasher won't be installed for a while, cover the standpipe. If the dishwasher is used rarely and the trap water may evaporate, then a "primer" may be needed. kas

I have never figured out why some people think replacing windows must be some type of "investment" to have any value. What other home improvements are held to this standard? What is the ROI on a new deck, kitchen couter tops,a new roof, new doors etc. What is the pay back for making these changes? What you should be thinking about is what happens if you DON'T replace your windows. Let's take a very conservative LOSS of savings analysis. Let's say you LOSE $250. per year over the next 20 years becasue you decided to leave your old windows. Let's further assume that utiity rates ONLY increase 3% per year over that time period. You would have spent $7164. more in utilities than if you had replaced your windows. And what do you have in 20 years? The same old window you had 20 years before that you have spent an additional $2000 for a few paint jobs, probably haven't cleaned and have had to live with the discomfort of air leaking in the winter. Then you decide to sell your house but the Real Estate person tell you that you will need to replace the windows if you have any hope of selling. So you go out at that point and discover that it's going to cost $20,000 to replace your windows. So total spent over 20 years is nearly $30,000 and all you ended up doing is buying new windows for the new owners of your house and got no benefit at all. Does that sound like the best approach to "investing" money? If you are looking for an investment, see a financial planner or a banker. If you have old windows that need to be replaced, see a window specialist. Don't confuse window replacement with something you want to make money on. Buy them for the same reasons you make other improvements to your home.

Talked to a local window company today about their windows for sound control, which are essentially a double pane window with laminated glass. They are a distributor for the following windows: http://www.vinylbilt.com/lib/pdfs/SSP_Glass.pdf The salesperson told me that upgrading my exiting windows (double pane windows by Vinylbilt, about 4 years old) with these ones will have marginal effect and will reduce the noise by about 10-15% based on his experience. Not sure how much I can trust this. I was determined to go this path but now have second thoughts. Anyone has experience with double pane laminated windows for sound proofing? I have started reading about soundproofing recently with no prior background. I feel that I know a lot more than every local window company that I have talked to so far, and these guys claim to have been in the business forever!

Argon really has no effect on sound propagation. Some sources will say that adding argon will help, but in real life it doesn't.

Now argon will make a difference in your energy numbers, but don't feel you missed out on the sound issue.

Even triple pane may be overrated for sound control...IF you are dealing with a narrow airspace triple pane unit.
For sound control you want the widest airspace you can find and make sure it is sealed tight (emphasis on tight).

Triple pane works - in a wide airspace. Otherwise, you get very little if any advantage with a triple pane over a dual pane if the overall width of the IGU is the same.

And stuckinsh....

I would STRONGLY suggest if you have something that actually works then continue with it.

I suspect that you are not in a good place to experiment and see if something else will work for you.

Laminated will help and adding laminated to the exisiting design should make it even better, but if I were in your position I would figure that overkill beats underkill everytime.

Thanks for the info. I'll keep it in mind if I ever need to replace the door. Do you know if there is much difference between manufacturers? I went with Milgard cause they had a rep for good quality and a great warranty.

I just added relatively inexpensive window film/heat control film by Gila from HomeDepot, to a wall that is 50% (single pane) windows. Certainly removed lots of outdoor sounds, the a/c sure cyles off for way more time too.

Amazing how I can't hear the phone or vacuum or anything from the patio that the wall lines where I used to be able hear the phone ringing just fine. Vacuum's I hate that sound anyways, glad I can hide from more than just its dust now.
