What about chairs instead of loveseat?
Comments (22)oopsie - where in the "nook" would you put the bookcase? It's where it is now because 1) I had planned on doing built-on bookcases on either side when we built the house, had been looking for a matching (IKEA) one for other side until my dad brought the Victrola over and 2) now it balances the Victrola. The Victrola is on that side b/c of where the crank is. The LS is 5ft long and 3ft deep - so can't move it to other end of area rug until we make the nook bigger, since it's too hard to get past Ds's chair. I don't want to move the sofa down closer to the bay - I like it centered on the slider. Eventually we'll build in bookcases and a window seat (not deep - will follow the contours of the bay so we can still fit the tree). The opening to the bay is 9 ft across, with 1ft 11" wall space on either side (where bookcase and Victrola are). Until we can afford to get that done we're living with the sofabed (bad idea to put it in the "great room" open to kitchen), we were trying to seat 5-7 people so bought LS and then found ottoman at GW, but I'm willing to get rid of the LS and ottoman as long as we can still seat 4-5 comfortably (not on wooden dining chairs & barstools). 2 chairs could be split up on either side of slider, LS cannot ;-) I sort of like the monochromatic scheme (very soothing), but would like to bring more pattern (besides tone-on-tone stripes) into the room. I wouldn't be adverse to painting the walls a different color when/if we redo the tile in the kitchen, but it would have to work with the oak cabinets, pine trim, tan carpet, linen shades and khaki/mocha sofa. Well, maybe not the carpet b/c if/when we do tile (and sunroom) I'd likely be putting hardwoods in FR. But the sofa and shades have to stay - we have too much $$ into them....See MoreNeed help quick on how to fit 2 large sofas in a smallish living room
Comments (10)Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I really love that photo, tibbrix, and I did wonder about moving the TV over in that corner. Hate to block a window, though. As for the rest of you, I agree about not being married to these sofas. We had actually started out with some darker green clean-lined sofas that were beautiful (from Crate and Barrel), but the cushions started sinking just a few months after purchase. They let us exchange for these, but I've never liked them--completely different style and not the color I wanted. So going with an even lighter green may indeed drive me nuts. I really wanted a pattern this time around too. What's important to my physical health is to have a sofa that sits high and is firm. (Arthritis in knees and back trouble.) I'm going to contact the manufacturer of this sofa and ask where we can purchase one custom. But what I do remember about them is that they only have this 84" sofa and then a very small loveseat--smaller than our current loveseat. We'd probably have to throw a chair in somehow. BUT I do wish I could get my husband to help me move those bookcases to either side of the TV to see how they would look. It would be a big job, but there's only one way to find out how it would work... The salesman has ONE blue sofa (I never considered blue EVER so have to wrap my mind around that--the rug would have to go). It's firm but doesn't sit as high as the celery sofa. He suggested getting 2 chairs with a table between to be in place of the loveseat. Where would we put lighting for the sofa, though? It would look odd to have table in the corner between the sofa and first chair and then another table in between the 2 chairs. But honestly, my first thought when I saw these was "old-fashioned." On the other hand, we probably can't afford the style I'd really like. Sorry for rambling......See MoreCan I add more boho without adding more clutter? Living room re-do
Comments (34)I’m laughing at the thought of my squishy, comfy pillows being called forbidding or them fighting with anyone. I took a couple of more pictures, including the chairs without the pillows and I think you’ll agree that the cushions make them look more inviting, not less. Also rearranged so that people can see that the sofa facing the fireplace, chair at each side will not work in the space. I tried it as the most obvious answer and discarded it. It’s awkward to me, like the sofa is turning it’s back on everyone. Also, due to the placement of the fireplace, the sofa and chairs cannot be centered on the fireplace or the bedroom will be blocked completely. I can’t pull the sofa back much more without blocking the walkway. The fact is, space for the ‘living room” is much smaller than you think. I also pulled the rug away, to demonstrate that the rug and sofa not going together is kind of the least of this room’s problems. I wish I could get a good angle that shows just how off center the couch and chairs are....See MoreCan I save this living room or do I need to return the sofas?
Comments (47)It has taken me awhile to take pictures of my living room since I made some changes. I did return the two sofas (painful—not only did they charge me a $450 shipping charge, they also charged a $250 cleaning fee, as our white dog rubbed against one of the sofas and there were strands of white fur on the back of one. Easily removed with a lint brush, but whatever, lesson learned). We bought two new sofas and had pillows made to coordinate the rest of the room. Took down the valance and made a cornice board as a replacement. Reupholstered the accent chair and bought a new rug. Took apart the entertainment center and painted each piece. Changed the wall color and the artwork. Very pleased with the results. Thanks again everyone for your suggestions!...See Moreblfenton
