Vinyl vs. Andersen Vinyl Clad Wood Interior
Comments (1)Jeld wen is a common brand in my area. A lot of my clients have installed them with no problems. What is the solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC)? You should look for shgc less than .40 This info is on a sticker from National Fenstration Rating Council (www.nfrc.org) and will list U-factor, visible light and climate location. Best of luck & make sure that the windows are flashed correctly!...See MoreAluminum Windows vs. Wood vs. Composite vs. Vinyle
Comments (13)1. The Bainbridge is the narrowest of their windows and the Soft-Lite Pro is also narrow. 2. Not necessarily. Soft-Lite is a well engineered window so it, with the optional meeting rail reinforcement, should be fine but some other narrow windows will not fare as well. 3. Typically, replacement windows, as a result of their thicker glass and more airtight insulation, will perform better. There are applications where the existing combination (usually with a storm window) might out perform the new double pane IGU window but not if you have single pane window without a storm. a. and b. Impossible to say without knowing exactly what type of window you have now. If you have single pane, both will outperform your existing windows. If you have double pane, it is very likely that your new windows will still outperform and be more sound resistant than your existing windows. 4. 0.09 is not drafty by any means and will probably be a huge improvement over your existing....See MoreVinyl vs wood casement windows
Comments (7)Thank you all of you for your recommendations. We are building our home in New Albany OH (east of Columbus). The price comparison between wood vs vinyl is roughly $31k vs $16k. Cost is a moderate factor so Vinyl or non wood windows is definitely an option. Since the interior is going to be painted solid color (off white), I think vinyl or PVC should be ok. When it comes to vinyl, some dealers said that they cannot mull some of the large windows vertically, and I have to make changes to the window sizes and layout in the plan. Out of Anderson/Silverline, Windsor and Quaker (all vinyl windows), only Quaker can actually match our design requirements. Just for clarity, here are the window schedule. (This schedule is only for sizing) https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxbJ91RIbyqMT2FtWmgwVjdsbmM/view?usp=sharing The main concern I have with Quaker Manchester series is that their DP rating is from 50 to 15 for the larger ones. Also, they only offer 20 year warranty, glass only 1-2 years for stress cracks. Have you had any experience with Quaker Manchester series? MP...See MoreSplit level exterior makeover
Comments (11)Great article, JudyG! So many of the points they made are spot on. In fact, we *are* using this split level to form a multigenerational household. My parents own the house. My husband and I (and our two kids) are buying it from them. We are going to live upstairs, and my parents are going to live in the in-law apartment (an addition, which is not pictured in the photo), downstairs. The layout is ideal for us. I really appreciate your ideas about the exterior. I think that I'm going to use your idea of painting the brick and the shingles the same color, to create a cohesive look and not draw attention to the "split" features. The shutters are definitely going to go. As for the color choice of the paint: I have been told that the roof is super old, and in need of replacement. My parents are also strongly advising that we replace all the windows, because they, too, are very old and drafty. So with so many projects/expenses coming up, I want to view this as an opportunity to make some thoughtful design choices and update the look of the house. We haven't met with the window vendor yet, or even decided if we want to go with wood vs. vinyl windows. I just got excited by the idea of being able to use a color other than white, to give the house a cool, well-designed look. But I'm not actually sure if black will look good in this particular house. Thanks again for all your suggestions and comments! I'll keep you updated!...See Moremmmmm127
