Room Darkening Shades? Blinds?

What are your recommendations for room darkening window treatments? I am using 2" faux wood blinds from HD right now and am NOT happy. I really want the room dark but refuse to go with the insulation-backed (or whatever it is they use) curtains/drapes because of the bulk.

I've had more success with good quality room darkening shades. Although there are a number of ways to tackle this, the shades are probably the most economical road.

Nobody beats J.C. Penney when it comes to window coverings. If they're not running a sale, wait a week....they will!

The only time we specify black out shades is if a client works swing shifts or requires complete darkness during the day lighting hours. The insulated unit will temper the sun's intensity as a standard but if you need it darker...get the shades. FYI...the Solar powered skylights qualify for the Energy Start Credit.

If the room gets full, direct morning light, I'd get the blackout shades. If it's just indirect morning sun, then maybe the room darkening ones would be enough. If your DD and SIL are the primary users of this guest room, you could also ask them which they would prefer. It looks as if the shades would be hidden during the day under the valance, and only be seen at night, if that makes a difference.

Oh no! All that typing for naught! :( Ok, so the micropleat shades we have are the room darkening version (guest bedroom, and master bedroom). They are mounted inside the window frames, so they sit behind the Designer Screen Shades, and are raised and lowered with a pull-cord (we wrap the excess cord after raising the micropleat shades around a plastic cleat that is attached to the window molding). The fabric itself is quite opaque, no light gets through it. However, like your wood blinds, there are holes for the strings that run from top to bottom, and light can and does get through those holes. It's not a problem for us, and it's not like daylight is pouring in in the morning. On warm, window open evenings, both sets of shades are raised, so morning light comes in, along with the fresh air. hTH!!!

I got some socalled 'blackout cellular shades' at one of the big online dealers (justblinds.com, I believe) that were a very nice and inobtrusive design mounted on the window's interior - you can get them in numerous options, my favorite is top-down bottom-up. Really effective in blocking out all light in my bedroom, I highly recommend them.

I'd spring for the most expensive ones you can afford, although the lower-end version I ordered online worked very well, and cost no more if not less than special-ordering from a big box store.
