Did anyone ever use beneficial insects indoors?
Comments (9)Howdy..ladybugs stink? What do they smell like? Considering we had large numbers, nobody mentioned an odor, and we sure didn't smell anything unusual. I heard that ladybugs bite..It was mentioned on the news, I think, two years ago. Someone said, those that bite are brown/red w/spots which happen to be the most common in Il.. As children, we'd catch ladybugs..not to harm, a friendly game, same as catching lightening bugs.. They'd land on us, hair, arms, even hands..no one got bit..We'd recite, ladybug, ladybug, fly away home..etc Mike, you've got it..Between horror/suspense/mystery 'books' and 'movies,' lady bugs are about as scary as a loaf of bread..lol. Oh yeah, when dogs bark at 2am, books/movies or not, someone is lurking around the house..The dogs bark when they see/hear someone, some 'THING'!!! It's dark here. If a prowler or 'whatever' is stalking the area, dogs detect sound sooner than people. Besides, I believe dogs, most animals, sense danger and/or other things most people cannot..only sensitive people have The 6th Sense... Mike, since lady bugs have an odor, I guess you're not planning on adding any to your home..lol.. I've talked to people who buy Praying Mantis, lol, but who'd want 2" bugs scooting around their house? lol..Since I've never handled mantis, other than the roto-tilar, I don't know if they'd be too scary to hold. Besides, my Shih tzu would chase them around the house..lol. A local (indoor) nursery sells insect eggs, but I think they're meant for a green house or perhaps outdoors???? Comments (6)annie, measure twice, cut once! ditto! i love to sew and make all of my own window treatments (except for one pair of drapes I found at Ikea of all places). I second Annie's caution to check out if you like sewing first....but that said, there are a lot of different levels of sewing. you can make drapes without ever sewing these days. you can use fabric glue for seams (only with thicker material as it shows through on silks and other lightweights) and rings with clips for the tops. I like thick drapes out of silk taffeta, which is really expensive, I couldn't afford these drapes if I bought them pre-made! You can get fabric pretty cheaply online or super cheaply if you live in LA or NY (LA fabric district is an addiction). the measuring and cutting is the toughest part of sewing for me. you need to talk to someone about your project, make sure you are leaving room for seam allowances, etc. I use my dining room table or floors for cutting. It's tedious work sometimes if you have a ton of cutting to do (my living room drapes involved 14 yards of silk taffeta--so you can imagine what my back felt like-- LOL). I love making my own drapes and think if you are so inclined, you will have a lot of fun making them and get something custom made that suits you perfectly. However, if this all sounds like too much, there are plenty of places that offer affordable drapes-- you just have to be patient because you might need to do some looking. good luck!...See MoreAnyone ever order outdoor window shutters with cutouts?
Comments (5)In our last house, I used painted white shutters and windowboxes, inside my daughter's nursery as part of a garden theme. I dont remember the site but we bought them online an they had crescent moon cutouts. I believe they were pine and DH painted them. They are pretty standard imho. Things to note. I have two shutter pet peeves 1) shutters that are too small to cover the window they flank --- very very common, but really looks bad, the scale is all off 2) shutters that are flat to the wall and cannot move .... imho these do not look nearly as nice as operational shutters, even those you never intend to use .... it also takes away all the very lovely hardware that is part of operational shutters...See MoreAnyone ever use a DH replacement kit (like one from Lincoln)
Comments (2)That type of replacement kit is OK, but there are potential drawbacks. Most replacement windows made today are in what I'll call a "retrofit" frame; in other words the new top & bottom sashes are in a frame that is made to go into your existing frame, so it is a frame-in-a-frame. The advantage of this is that even if your opening is out of square, the new frame can be installed square in the out of square opening. And it can even be slightly off in size and still be installed perfectly. My home, which was built in 1949, had one opening that is a whopping 1/2" out of square. The type of replacement that you're considering would have been horrible for that opening. Fortunately I put in a framed retrofit in that sash opening (I have both types in my house). So if all of your openings are perfectly square, and everything is measured exactly, they should go in quickly and easily and work fine. One other thought that comes to mind. The kit that you're considering works fine but generally is not as energy efficient "long-term" as the retro frame systems out there. Replacement kits like Lincoln's consist of new sashes and vinyl tracks that snap in to the existing sash opening. Those vinyl tracks have a squishy foam behind the tracks that deteriorates over time and loses some of its tension, causing the window to not be as air tight as it originally was. Consumers Report magazine rated windows a few years back; all of the foam-backed window systems rated from average to below average for air and water infiltration and only the non-foam backed windows did well. Bottom line - the Lincoln sash kit system and others like it, for me, is still acceptable, but it's not the best. By using it you will get a low maintenance better window than you presumably currently have, and for a bit $ more you could get a bit better long-term performer....See Morestuart51
