Comments (1)A properly installed metal conduit can be the ground. If you install it right, you can install a grounded receptacle using the ground from the conduit. The armor of old BX is not a sufficient ground. Neither is current type MC (though it will typically have a grounding conductor other than the armor). Type AC's armor (and it's integral bonding strip) can be used as a ground. Type NM (ROMEX) with a ground wire is OK. Most of the smaller stuff (12, 14) has a full size ground (it's just bare). Larger stuff has a smaller grounding conductor because such is an acceptable size. Art. 250.130(C) allows the extension of a ungrounded branch circuit to be connected to certain grounds to pick up the equipment ground....See More2 Prong ungrounded outlets in the Bedrooms
Comments (6)It depends what you mean by "good enough." GFCI will provide occupant protection. It won't allow things like surge protectors to necessarily do all they can do for you. Frankly for several years, new construction requires AFCI's in all bedroom outlets (including lighting). The latest codes require them in other living spaces. More concerning than the lack of grounded receptacles or GFCI/AFCI is just what is the condition of the existing wiring and what the loading on the various circuits are. If this is a concern, I would implore you to get an actual electrician to give you a read. Every home inspector I've ever dealt with is a complete idiot when it comes to any more than sticking his circuit tester in the receptacle and seeing if the bulbs light up....See MoreAre there "grounded" or GFCI 2-pronged outlets?
Comments (3)Grounding and GFCI protection are two different things. If the outlets are still 2-prong, then they aren't grounded. But they could be protected by a GFCI breaker or a GFCI outlet that is upstream of the 2-prong outlet....See MoreUsing a cheater 3-prong to 2-prong adapter
