best Paul Barden rose for hot/dry climate?
Comments (7)Joyce Barden purchased maybe 8 years ago? Or whenever it came out. I've started cuttings that grew into 8 ft roses after I got that. It's about a foot tall, had one bloom, won't grow. Next to it are three roses that were rooted cuttings, so it's not my soil or my care. I forgot about it until this thread - it's hidden by some coreopsis now. It's coming out in the next few months. Too bad because I wanted to like it but trying to grow it all those years has been a waste. It seems like a six month old cutting. Don't remember where I got it, may have been Roses Unlimited but it is the only rose that I've had that kind of trouble with from anywhere....See MoreBest minis for hot humid climate
Comments (8)I second Pierrine and its color sport Sweet Melody. Others that do really well for me in New Orleans are Leading Lady (though its almost big enough to call a hybrid tea), Hot Tamale, Caliente, Bees Knees, Miss Flippins, and Linville. All of these bloom a lot. 2 new (to me) roses I got this past spring have been impressing me a lot for their sheer volume of bloom, shapely flowers, and light but bright colors. They are the pure lavender mini, Always A Lady, and the peach and pink-panther-pink blend, Electric Lady. E.L. blooms nearly continuously, and the blooms are impressive for form and color. Always a Lady blooms in distinct cycles with true mini-size blooms, but the cycles come quickly and literally cover the bushy plant. Very nice. Both these are compact plants. Comments (7)Yes, some of us do. This can be done in those zones where you have a longer growing season. You being in Texas should allow you to do so as well. Just realize that some of the double flowering type IIs need old wood and a winter chill and some just need old wood to have the double blooms so if you treat these type IIs as type IIIs, you might not get any double blooms. I say might because if you saw recently BorS showed pictures of her Piilu that she treats as a type III and she still got both single and double blooms. Sometimes clematis do what they want and not what the literature says they are supposed to do. Another place to look for cheap clematis is Walmart. I would tend to stay away from those clematis in boxes that they sell most places (although some people have gotten them and they did fine with some babying and growing out). Walmart used to sell small clematis in orangey-rust colored square pots that were from Roseville and they only cost about $4.88 plus tax. I have purchased these in the past and potted them out and they have grown up to be fine plants (that is where I got my Piilu and Proteus). Two things to be aware of if you purchase these types of clematis is that first the tags may get switched up on these clematis and you might end up getting something that doesn't match up with the tag in the pot. Secondly, these clematis are often not watered or taken care of in the long term so be on the look out when they first arrive and buy them early....See MoreBest mini floras for hot, humid climate
Comments (2)I don't know about Florida, but the Kristin I obtained from Nor'East does not need spraying for mildew in my California garden like all the rest of my minis. It is labeled as a mini, not a mini flora, but it's character is like that of a mini flora. Deep green leaves, a white pedal with deep pink edges, and the bloom stays in a perfect bud stage for a very long time before opening. Also my Rockin' Robin Shrublet rose (a little bigger plant but not by much) has not needed any spraying for mildew. It is a white with light and dark pink stripes. It has abundant blooms. These two roses look very well together along with Child's Play, a white with lighter pink edges. Child's Play does need to be sprayed for mildew though. A bouquet with these three are very striking. Elegant, with Rockin' Robin being a little bit of an impudent standout....See Morevegassun
