Main Panel as Junction Box to Sub-Panel

I need to install a dedicated 20A receptacle a few feet away from the main panel. All circuit breaker positions in the main panel are occupied but there are still many knockout positions available. I do have a sub-panel with open positions about 10 feet away. My question is: Can I run my conduit for the new receptacle to the main panel, install the new breaker in the sub-panel, and then use the existing rigid conduit connecting the two panels to run the 2 #12 wires to the new breaker in the sub? If this is "legal", would it really matter what panel I attach the neutral to? It's almost as if I am asking if a main panel can be used as a junction box. Thanks in advance.
