If you go with short and leave the taller cubbies to the right, you're going to have to make them short enough to clear the top. Otherwise you're going to run into the same problem as with long drapes.

I'd love the look of long drapes, but I think short could look really cute. Maybe you could do a contrasting band along the bottom or a cute ruffle to make it more princessy.

Have you thought about doing a faux roman blind across the top under the curtains?

Also, will you be closing the drapes every night or will they be for show?

With a view like that, maybe she only needs tied-back sheers to finish the window. Does she need the darkness, or are there privacy issues? If so, maybe try room-darkening cellular shades.

Thanks daisychain01 - The drapes needs to be closed at night since the sun comes early at 5am and DD sleeps better in darkness.

Thank you Sherrmann - I like the look of sheers too, very dreamy. However she does need darkness when she sleep so I'm thinking about putting on a curtain with light filtering lining. Would you think it'll be too "heavy" looking?

I would have the drapes end just below the window sill, the hem almost brushing the storage cabinet on the right. What I'm not sure about is where to start them. The current style is to hang drapes near the ceiling, but I might lean towards placing the rod closer to the top of the window frame.

What a great space! You can certainly go with short curtains to just below the sill. A pretty fabric, lined to block sunlight.

Or, for some *drama*, maybe a fabric pretty swag top with pretty bullion fringe or tassels, or a cornice board up to the ceiling. Then, the curtain that moves is purely functional.

I lined my daughters white cotton curtains with a liner and they don't look heavy at all. There are different levels of light filtering liners. I went with the one that was one step lighter than blackout. I think the blackout was actually black, but the one I got is white. I just sewed the lining to the pre made drape along the top - very easy. You can also put a layer of crinoline between the liner and the curtain fabric to make it look poofy and full.

I would do short curtains....just below the trim on the windows...and a rod at the ceiling. And for the Princess effect a great pouffy valance with a sort of over skirt, tied with ribbons like a story book princess!
Don't worry about being over the top....she won't be at the princess stage long...so make it all she ever dreamed of....and in a couple of years you can remove the "overskirt" and the ribbons.

Yes I wanted to install curtain rod (as high as possible but replace the existing track), hang valance (with trim and crystals). However I still need to make the most important decision - fabric to use for the drapes. I loved this one but afraid it'll be to pinkish:

What a lovely room and large space you have to work with! If it were me, I'd do a layered WT with 2" white wood blinds for light control/filtering and stationary panels framing the window. Then I'd center the storage cubbies on the wall so the panels fall to either side--or even move the cubbies to a different wall.

Children's preferences change rapidly and what she loves right now might look to kiddish in a few years and then you'll have to change it. The wood blinds will be something that will last through several room makeovers and then you only need to change out the stationary panels as she gets older--which is a fairly inexpensive change.

I've just finished doing room makeovers for my two DD's (ages 9 and 15). I did their rooms previously 3-years-ago. Both rooms involved different paint colors, bedding and WTs; yet the wood blinds stayed.
