A cabinet that is too tall might come to close to the window. A big drop leaf table might be too much in such a small corner. What would you think of a unique antique small table or a antique wooden chair, like a beautiful windsor chair?

How about a hutch with display that has a pull-out table?

A vote for a smaller console table or a shorter/smaller cabinet with the square windows (as in the example above)

Why a smaller (shorter) cabinet or console table? Because I would LOVE to see more lamps in your very lovely space! And you could add one or possibly two lamps in that space ....

IF you do choose a larger cabinet -- then I vote for dark-brown cabinet pictured above -- which would echo the strong visual motif of the squares in your whole space. THEN add a long low console table under the window (or just above the bottom moldings of the window) in the dining room -- and add lamps. LOL! (yes! -- I am a lamp addict ..... :) LOL!

Behind the couch would be a good place for a parsons table which could be pulled out for extra dining. A few large decorative items on it would break up the space without losing visual interest.

I'm definitely picturing a small cabinet, square shape, darker wood. Definitely a lamp on top, quite possibly a plant. Maybe a piece of pottery on the left side with the red from your living room and teal (is it?) from the room to the right to help transition the two (seemingly very) different spaces.

Thanks so much for the input! Jan, I agree that we could use a lot of lamps. What's funny is that I am a lamp addict too, but you'd never know it bc we hardly have any! We have 4 young boys, and no lamp would survive in our main living area. The few that we have are in our bedroom and the guest bedroom. I'd love to put lamps behind the sofas and on our built ins and in our dining area, etc. But that will have to wait until the kids all get a little older. I like the idea of the parsons table behind the couch, calirose.

So, no big fans of the red display cabinet? For some reason, my DH and I both really love it. It's just different and unique looking. We are also big fans of the color red. Do you think it would be too jarring? We could get the same cabinet in a stained cherry finish. I know that it's circles, but there is something squarish about circles, isn't there (kind of a soft square :))?

I'm confused about just where you are seeking help. Is it UNDER that 9-light square window between the dining area dnd the sitting area?

At first I thought you meant the huge bank of windows in the dining room. If there, my first thought was a window seat. you already have the window inset a little, so the window seat would not stick out much.

If where the 9-light window is, a sort of shallow low buffet would be a good item. I would not put anything there on the wall that would fight with the shape of that square window. Maybe the round starburst mirror. But I'd also consider a shelf for stemmed wine glasses, and the furniture beneath it being your bar cabinet. In the perfect spot for an after dinner drink to be served.

If you don't drink, then have the dessert china stored below and a set of wallhung plates displayed above it. I would not install any wall mounted lighting, unless it was plugged in, because you need to keep your options open there. You might want to put a higher furniture piece there in the future, and the wall lighting would be in the way.

Thanks again for all the input. So, I'm asking for advice about what to put under the large square 9 lite between the great room and dining room. The rooms are very room; so, they can support a lot. It is probably a good 15 ft. from that wall to the couch. So, moccasinlanding, do you think that one day I should put a high furniture piece there? I was thinking of that low drop leaf table eventually, but last night, in looking around, I thought, I need somthing tall bc everything in the room seems so low. We don't have any tall furniture.

gracie, I'm confused by your question. Do you mean what does our property look like? The outside is what is behind all the windows.... I took this picture at night; so, all the windows look black. We have a very nicely wooded deep yard in the rear where the windows look out.

The problem with a lot of the lower storage is that if we are going to have a cabinet in this spot, we'd like to be able to display pictures and our random tchotchkes in it. Just using the top of a cabinet wouldn't really provide a lot of room. We have a ton of photos that we'd like to be able to display in various areas of the house, etc. Anyway, if we did that, it would be kind of nice to have that storage be kind of at eye level and not all under 3 feet. We must have posted at the same time! I should mention that I have no idea of the size of this cabinet I just assumed it would fit just under the window. I like the dark cabinet you posted above but I also love the red that seems to bring in the red of the drapes.

Well, I see that thermsen has offered you a PS of one view and I'll provide another one--apologies for poor PS skills. I made it pretty large since this appears to be the Stanley cabinet and is 82" x nearly 57" if I'm guessing right. I suspect it would pretty much fill that space, but just a guesstimate on my part. Anyway, here you go! Lovely rooms BTW! I think the smaller cabinet might fit better, but I actually like the way the circular grills kind of pick up the circles in your drapes. I'm not sure if the red color would look more subdued in real life... good luck with this and sorry I can't hang around to hear more--off to run errands.

Now you have two views! I just want to say from one person who has 3 young boys to another with boys, there's a great chance that the glass on these will get broken! I do like the red though. I would look around some flea markets and think about refinishing a cabinet. You could always paint it the color you like and even change it in the future. Just a thought. I just like the idea of something old with some character in that space. It's a beautiful room by the way!

These are large rooms, and I don't want to make the mistake that I feel like a lot of people make in choosing things that are too small for a space. I feel like a lot of people are scared of large pieces and therefore often choose fixtures, furniture, etc. that are too small for a space.

Anyway, sujafr, you are right that it is the Stanley cabinet with those dimensions. The 1st floor has 10 ft. ceilings. So, to put it in perspective, where the dining room ceiling meets that wall (against which the cabinet would be standing) is exactly 10 ft. The cabinet is roughly 6'8". So the top of the cabinet would be 3'4" below that point and roughly 1 ft. below the bottom of that window. That wall is 67" wide, and the drywall space between the edge of the square window frame to the edge of the wall is about 10". So, the edge of the cabinet would line up with that corner where the dining room ceiling meets the wall. Am I describing this right? So, I'm thinking that thermsen's dimensions are slightly closer.

Avesmor, you hit on my dilemma--trying to tie the 2 seemingly different spaces together. Some say it works, others say no. I feel like this red cabinet could be a transition. Do you think I should just change the color of the dining room walls? Change the drapes in there? If so, what color? I'm not in love with the drapes in the dining room, which I made, and have threatened to change them, but my DH said to wait at least a year. Anyway, thanks for all the input!

I like that cabinet with the circles, but I don't love it there, framed by all the rectangles in the windows.

But I do like the red. It does a good job of picking up the window treatments in both rooms and creating that unifying factor I was referring to.

It's funny bc all the squares in the window didn't really factor into my thought process, but I guess I can see how they stick out in these photos with the black night sky highlighting the grilles. We do have a lot of square elements in our house, but the other element is curves, that's the one I think about more bc it was more deliberate. We 3 elliptical archways off of the great room, a curved fireplace mantel and hearth, and eyebrow dormer (that was the inspiration for the house), and we have rounded furniture--all tables in our house are circular or oval (I don't like sharp corners for kids). I'm thinking of putting that sunburst mirror in the dining room, and may be that could tie in the circles.... Not sure. I drive myself nuts with every decorating decision. At this rate, by the time I'm "done," I'll have to start over again. I'm still second guessing everything in the dining room. I was trying to step oustide my comfort zone, which is usually warm tones--reds, yellows, browns. So, I went with that blue/green color. It's actually quite nice. I'm just struggling with tying it all together.

Thermsen, too funny about the boys. I'm sure that the glass will get broken too. Fortunately, we found a glass place that makes replacement glass for just about anything. My BIL who has 4 girls once saw our kids pushing, shoving, and wrestling, and he kind of smugly said to me, "we just don't do that in our house." Fortunately, we know a lot of other all boy families, and seeing some of them in action, makes me feel like my kids are normal and not completely wild.

Still voting for the dark wood cabinet from the original posting -- with the square windows.

For a pop of red -- just add red vases and/or bowls inside the cabinet.

How about adding a large dark wood bowl to the dining table -- then fill it with red apples?

My vote is for a cabinet or piece without round or square shapes because I think it is too busy with the windows. I like the one posted at 14:43 but am not sure what size that is.

I vote for that desk-like dark one you posted and some tall buffet lamps would look awesome and maybe a display stand with a plate or picture on it.

I'm glad you posted the views you did as I am thinking of painting my dining room that peacock blue you have so it helps me envision it compared to the other walls in a light color. :-)

Sorry, I thought you definitely needed the extra dining that you mentioned in you first post. If you really do not need and extra holiday table then go with a medium height cabinet. I really like the one you showed @14:33 with the intricate details.

I would not do a cabinet with glass doors under the window. You would "lose" the pretty window and also run the risk of it looking cluttery. Put your tchotchke cabinet on a solid wall where it won't compete with windows.

I think that the desk at 14:33 is perfect too, as long as the size is right. In brings in the color of your leather chair and with a nice red vase or accessories, it would be perfect. It's useful too. And no glass!

Here is the circle designed chest with lamps that reflect the circle feel, color picked from dining room.

I like the one that calirose put in the space, but would put only one lamp and make it a smaller one. Then maybe some pics or a catch all bowl or basket. That red cabinet is the wrong color for the space and it's way to tall, and the circle design just doesn't work there. I think the window should be enhanced not hidden, it's a cool window!
