Comments (20)I'm still having a love/not so much relationship with daylilies. A visit to the daylily forums always sucks me back in! This fall I am going to try spreading them out among the other garden plants to see if that works better. I want to do something different with that prominent, mostly daylily-filled bed. Angelonea: I'm not a huge fan of the flowers, and they cost a lot when they are not available in 6-pac. Some didn't thrive. But then, just a few of them grew really well and are still blooming after months of show. So, do I grow them again or forget it? I can't decide! Anigozanthos/Kangaroo Paw: 1st year they sit there. ok. Year #2 they throw up a few flower stalks. Not bad. Year #3 they put on an amazing show that lasts for months and thrills the hummingbirds. Fabulous/show stopping! They don't return for year 4. To make them work in the garden, I have to add some new plants every year. Sometimes I discover well after the fact that the tags have been switched. The cultivars I like are vastly outnumbered by the ones that hold no interest. Whether 'paws are in favor depends upon if I won that year's expensive gamble. Dahlias. Hmmm I haven't grown them since we lived in the snail/slug house. ;-) I have been thinking about planting a few here...those photos makes me want to even more....See MoreNew to gardening, hope I didn't mess up!
Comments (9)DEFINITELY mulch them. And yes, heat-stress. Remember -- we have had record-setting heat for weeks now. I know it's worrying to water water water, when everything you read urges you to save water, BUT there are things you can do. When I wash dishes, I use a dishpan. I use a very mild dish detergent -- "Eco-sensitive" brands. The RINSE water from all pots and bottles goes to the nearest roses outside the door. When I'm done washing, DH carries the dishpan out into the garden, and empties it onto our less-sensitive plants. Not one bit of it goes to waste -- or goes down the drain. If you boil corn-on-the cob (or other vegetables) let the water cool, and then give it to your plants. That's exactly the way my Great-Step-Grandmother watered the roses in her farmhouse garden in rural Texas of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The minutes I spend outside, dumping rinse water gives me a quiet early-morning garden visit that's priceless. I'm sure it was the same for Grandma Mintice Cain. Any roses that come up with spider mites or aphids get the dishwater tossed directly at them....See MoreDidn't know stepdaughter existed for 13 yrs
Comments (1)Tame, That's wild! I'm guessing that although your husband refuses to go for 'family counseling' you are probably the one who has the most responsibility for this child as far as parenting goes. You need to give your husband an ultimatum, either he goes to family couseling with you or the child goes back to her mother or into a foster home. You should not have to parent this child without help. If it was me I'd put him AND his daughter out the door! Good Luck!...See MoreFlash of Brilliance (Don't worry, it didn't hurt.)
Comments (8)Cawaps, truly. Hallucinations? yes. I swear. I staved off Menopause for an extra 17 years or so by forcing my gyno to keep me on The Pill. Finally, at 57 she put her foot down and said, "No MORE!" I'm trying this new stuff, but frankly I have a hard time seeing through the sweat dripping in my eyes. Hence the hallucinations? At least this year my energy bills should be lower. Practigal, not that much extra flooring. I just finished laying reclaimed pine which I love. I don't mind the change in flooring so much. I haven't stained anything yet, but think I might be able to use some of my flooring's stain on the pine to tie it together some. Not yet thinking about that. As far as moving the island around? Probably. I move my base cabinets around when I need space or tops to work on. I am not confined to certain areas, but rather tasks have their area where they're preformed. I can't see an island with the peninsula, but without it seems to make more flow sense. The opening between peninsula and opposing cabinets is 36" already, but without the peninsula I'd have the 8'. Lensai, I have a lovely school house, close-to-ceiling light over my sink. I love it. I'm thinking if I could raise the pendants. I love them, too, so I'll have to think about this. I have to tell you, I've almost convinced myself to take out the peninsula. I have the cabinetry, so having to buy some isn't even an issue. If I could get some of the crap out of the way (read: everything on the counters) I'd take a picture. But right now I'm very, very lazy....See Morefriedajune
