What may help is for you to install (on the inside) window
flims on all or some of your windows. This product is like
a flexible plastic foil that sticks to the window glass.
I think Home Depot sells different sizes and shades of
window films. This film will help a lot in reducing the
UV, glare, and etc..

The window film shades comes in very light to very dark
gary color films. The UV protection level is from low level
to 99% UV protection.

You also need to buy the right tools and etc. to install the
films on the window glasses. This is a (DIY) Do It
Yourself weekend project. It is very easy to install but
you can also hire a pro.

Thank you Mave for your response. I have been doing some research and 3M and DuPont make different products. The windows are wall to wall on all the outside walls of the apartment and I would not want to interfere with the natural color of the light. A DIY is out of the question. This is a big project and I hope will not be to expensive. Still researching.

I was hoping someone here had used VISTA window film--it also pretty much eliminates the UVB rays, as well, and is recommended by interior designers as one of the few films that protect fabrics, floors, carpets, etc. It also helps with energy costs. You might look into it--I'm having an estimate done next week, but from what I've researched, some of the window films crack and deteriorate after a few years and lose their effectiveness. I'd research carefully before making a decision. Good luck.

Another issue to keep in mind: most window manufacturers warranties are voided when these films are applied. If the window seal fails, and the film is applied, the landlord may require you to replace the window. Be sure the landlord and the window manufacturer approve the application.
The only other option, would be a window treatment to shield the sunlight when it's at it's worse.

As Mike35 mentioned, you do have to be careful using after-market films because it can void the glass warranty.

The two "types" of UV that concern us here on the ground are UVA and UVB (there is also UVC, but it is stopped in the upper atmosphere by the ozone layer). The difference between the two types is frequency of the rays...so why might this be important?

Well, first, UVA is primarily responsible for your suntan. UVB is primarily responsible for your sunburn. But, UVA is also the source of those sun-wrinkles that many beach-loving folks end up with...and both A and B may contribute to skin cancer - although there is still some controversy in that area.

Second, UVB is stopped by ordinary window glass. If you find a film that claims to stop UVB rays, when applied to a window, then you are not getting any added benefit from the film...your windows are already doing that...UVA on the other hand passes quite readily thru glass. About 95% of the UV we receive on the ground is UVA.

Third, while the window films may very well stop better than 99% of UV rays from penetrating into your home, unfortunately visible light also affects the amount of fading damage...not just UV.

The amount of potential fade damage that can occur is called the "Damage Weighted Transmittance" (used to be called the "Kratch factor" if I recall correctly - but I may have spelled it wrong). Anyway, the lower the DWT percentage - the lower the amount of fading - or the more protection from sun damage.

Blocking UV alone ends up with a DWT of about 65%. Blocking UV by using a tinted LowE coating which will block part of the visible spectrum as well can result in a DWT of 35% - or better. But, the darker the tint the less light transmittance through the window (obvious), so it will affect your view. And the darker the tint the more likely that an after market film will damage the IGU (dual pane glass) due to built up heat stress.

My point with all this wasn't to cast a shadow (sorry, the pun was intentional) on what you want, but just to add a bit of information when you are considering the various films that are out there.

If you really want to avoid fading, then keep whatever it is out of direct sunlight as much as possible. Coatings and tints certainly help, but they are not close to being 100% effective.
