Taking off the garter

My husband decided that he was going to take off the garter with his teeth!! I couldn't believe he was actually doing it in front of all of those people!! Someone told us that when he started to take it off, my dad started chugging the champaign.

I REFUSED to allow the garter thing! I had one on, it was my something blue. But I intended to keep it. Right before the party broke up, my bridesmaid's boyfriend announced he was not going home until he had it in his posession! So, I motioned my hubby over, and he quickly removed it while I was seated at their table. I flung it across the table to her boyfriend, and he politely put it on his head! I hope someone took some pictures of that! I am dying to see him with the garter on his head again! LOL

My bouquet toss was a joke too, the only one who tried to catch it was the flowergirl. I threw it right over her head, but she ended up snatching it off of the floor, and keeping it.

I don't mind the garter thing, but we don't really have enough single friends to try to catch either the garter or the bouquet. Last year when I was MOH at my friends wedding and DF was a groomsmen, my brother was the best man and he was so determined to catch the garter that he knocked over a 13yo boy and elbowed my DF in the face (it was an inch away from DF's fingers when my brother did the dive for it). He also wore the garter on his head for the rest of the evening.

That house was a snake hibernicula and it makes me not only feel sorry for the occupants, but the snakes who depend on dens for surviving the winters. There is one state, and I forget which, where their local garter is going extinct mostly because they are killed by humans. No, I don't expect the family to have to co-exist with hundreds of snakes but neither did I appreciate they killed over a hundred harmless garter snakes when they knew full well what they were getting into. I have a garter snake up in one of my g'houses now. It has decided that laying on the benches daily is a good thing to do and I work around wherever it happens to sun itself. Last year it was a big rat snake who lived there. I also have a resident black snake in the cellar and we just watch what we pick up. Obviously I am not afraid of them and appreciate their role in prey/predation. No, I don't relocate them. We did remove any delapidated outbuildings on our property so they wouldn't be drawn to occupy structures near the house. It's rare now to have one 'get in' the house and if one does, my husband leaves it to me to pick it up and remove it. LOL.

Garter snake=harmless. Cotton mouth= Yikes! Too scary, countrycarolyn. I had an uncle from Ohio that was came to visit us in Alabama to hunt. We took him up to Mt. Cheaha where we saw some guy trying to capture a HUGE (my young mind remembers it being about 5' long, but I don't was know what it was in reality) rattlesnake alive so he could take it to some lady who milked the venom and did research. I guess she was not normal, having a hobby like that. My uncle hates snakes and decided right then and there that Alabama was a No Hunting Zone. I was amazed when I moved to NH that there are NO native poisonous snakes. NONE! Hard to believe. My 11yo daughter can catch snakes with her hands. I guess she's not normal, either. This week in the garden we saw a big garter snake with a huge bulge in its body. Don't know what it had for dinner, but it looked like it was about the size of a mole or vole. What a helpful snake! P.S. Once in Alabama there was a small rattle snake underneath my bed. I have no idea how it got there, but it was quite a surprise to see it staring at me when I went to get a box out. Remembering my parents' adrenaline-pumped strategy to kill the thing is still a hysterical memory. I'm not too scared of snakes, and they would have been better off letting me try to catch it, but then I would have missed out on one of the most hysterically funny episodes of my childhood. The best paid comedy writer couldn't have made it any funnier.

i talk to anoles, too. :) in fact, we- me & the kids- put them and green tree frogs in the cool greenhouse for the winter to help with bugs. don't know that it's worked, but it is fun looking for them. the big male likes to sun on my bird's perch, and he likes to flirt with me, bobbing his provocative throat pouch at me so i'll be impressed. i bob back at him and tell him he's handsome. hb- i can't say that i'm too surprised the racer was striking under those circumstances. i think i'd try to bite, too. lol. glad he didn't take off. i haven't seen ours around since he got in the net, but didn't see him before that either, so no biggie. we sight a big king snake once or twice a summer- i think it's probably the same one we've been seeing for a number of years. we kept a couple rough green snakes as pets for a summer in our terrarium with some anoles and skinks, and they were so cool. they hung out and curled up into knots together- the thing that surprised me most- and were like living sculptures. the anoles got used to them within a day or 2. they were also complete pigs, which is part of why we let them go, fat & sassy, ready for fall. when we released them, they hung out in the same tree for a couple of days- i guess they thought it was a big cage. we got some good pix of them there. my kids and i wouldn't mind having another snake, but i don't want anything that eats furry things, which eliminates most of them, unfortunately. as an aside, i haven't found a single garter snake in the 13 years we've lived here. lots of other kinds, but no garters. i thought they were ubiquitous. probably one of the coolest was the ultra tame milk snake we found one day. gorgeous markings! worm snakes are cool, too. tam

You're sure? LOL Sorry...I'm just being overly cautious, I guess. I had no idea they would strike. I must've really ticked him off when I unearthed him...or her. Guess I'll just cover it back up with the dirt...although I have to admit, I don't much care for them. LOL *Would never harm one, though...don't anyone yell at me, OK? LOLAM

I am in the military so I had a camouflage garter made and also bought one to wear and throw. We blindfolded DH and then one of my buddies sat on my lap and pulled up his pant leg while DH started looking for the garter. We kept the camouflage one and threw the other one.

We also had two garters. I go to Oklahoma State University and we are both HUGE fans of OSU football so I had an OSU garter to surprise my new hubby. He kept the OSU one and wore it on his arm. He threw the blue one that I was also wearing.

My mom made two garters for me, one for me to wear and keep (she made it big enough for me to wear on my upper thigh) and one to toss (smaller, so it fit on my lower leg, and I only put it on right before the toss...)
