replacing sash cords in windows with sash chains
Comments (20)Dear Arlosmom, I spoke to my carpenter and I looked at my pulleys. My pulleys are smoothly rounded out, not grooved. Carpenter says he has never come across a grooved pulley and has still changed out cords to chains, as he did on mine. He says that sash cords are standard 3/8" and he replaced mine with 3/8" chain. If 3/8 is not available to you, you can go a little larger, but stay under 1/2". At 1/2" they are too fat to work well in the pulley. As far as how to attach chain to weight, there is a loop on the top of the weight. You don't need any special hardware. His method with mine was to put the chain through the loop and hook the chain back onto itself by opening up a link and hooking it back onto another link then closing the link back up. He said depending on size of your weight's loop, you might use a wire if the chain won't go through. He advised that you must see to it that your pulleys are working smoothly. If they are gunked up with paint, be sure to scrape them so that they function well and don't rub on any window parts, because a smooth-working pulley is key to smooth-working windows. Any other questions, feel free to ask! Best, FW...See MoreWindsor Pinnacle Clad or WeatherShield with Prices
Comments (19)Loewen is the best of what you have listed. I know the Loewen dealer in Huntsville. Loewen makes really good stuff, but its pricey. Burt Dale owns the Marvin distributorship in Huntsville and he is also pricey. Pella in you market use to be Frank Day, but he sold out to a company in Indiana I think. Rumor has it, they are a train wreck. The Loewen dealer in your market is relatively new. Loewen practically pulled out of there when the market went bad. The current dealer runs pretty lean and I doubt they will have nearly as much of a mark-up as Marvin (Dale inc). Windsor is not a quality product. Its mid-level builder grade. The sales rep is pushing it for a reason. Could be they get higher margin/commission. Could be the manufacture is paying a spiff directly to the sales rep (not uncommon). Weather Shield use to be a good product when the old man was still running it. His sons took over and pretty much gutted the quality control. When Ed Schield still ran it, they made good stuff. I think Ed is still alive but not active in the day to day operations. Give Loewen a call. I would use them on my projects, but they are made in Canada and if I need parts this time of year I'm pretty much out of luck until they thaw out. I they had planned on building a plant/warehouse in South Carolina before the recession hit just to address the issue of weather delays and service, but I don't know if that ever happened....See MoreEagle vs Weather Shield
Comments (16)I currently have no dog in the hunt as I work in commercial aluminum and glazing not residential wood. However I have been in the industry 30 years myself and while you state I am uniformed, you are incorrect. I have sold all the brands you listed plus others and in no way shape or form will I state that W/S and Eagle are "very good windows" and will not bashing I just give my blunt and honest opinion. I will agree that allot of the issues are installation. I was not looking to insult you in anyway shape or form, the forums have been over run lately by spammers and when someone just appears and posts apparently promoting products it just strikes me as a rat 95% of the time....See MoreMarvins v.Jeld Wyn v Weather Shield
Comments (8)As far as Tilt Pacs, Marvin makes the best i have scene. They will be pricey but you need to remember that it is a retro fit and a custom product and you will be touching nothing else in the home other than applying a new jamb liner and sash.I work for a company now that sells LePage windows and while i think they are really a great product at a excellent price point i do not come on here pushing them as i mainly try and just give advice from my own experience as asked. I am not as versed as oberon on the performance data of windows or glass but my knowledge comes more from practical experience of selling the product and listening to peoples positives and negatives on product and having dealt with the window manufacturers distributors and or service departments directly. That's my story and i am sticking to it....See Moreafsa
