Comments (11)Corbels certainly come in all different shapes and sizes. I didn't even realize what I had would be considered corbels until someone commented on mine from a picture I had posted. Our corbels are for decorative purposes only. We have cherry shaker style cabinets, so ours are very simple. They were the last thing installed, after the backsplash, beadboard, and shaker pegs that abutt them. Our GC installed a temporary piece of wood in their location so that the correct spacing was done for installation of these items. Comments (45)Base cabinets were mentioned once. They would be good bracing! It seems the discussion went towards braces that you buy in a store. To attach base cabinets as bracing one will need angle iron, and a lot of fine tuning work in terms of the cabinet feet and height above the floor. Uh-oh. Sounds impractical now. So, the 90 degree braces at floor level now seem to be the best thing to do. mudworm, on lowes.com I entered two keywords: aluminum tube. I got positive results. Here are some of them. Item #: 215640 Item #: 216100. Go to wherever they have these in the store and you will see steel tube too. Or, web search for steel tube. I just figured that "aluminum tube" would be easier to search for. Buy aluminum tube if there is no steel. Once a metal is made into a tube it is very rigid. In home depot I have also seen steel and aluminum tube. So, tube IS available if you know where to get it. Tube is stronger than thin flat metal. If you add tube on top of the braces you will have both the benefits of what advertguy proposes and the benefits of the 90 degree bracing, and no deleterious secondary impact. advertguy in your latest post "Remove those braces from the bottom" is not clear. Comments (18)Well, I'm in the minority seeing as I had no qualms about smacking an ornate crown molding and corbels on my plain cabinet doors. That's probably because I don't think of my kitchen as "mission" or "shaker" style. Its style could only be described as "What alku05 likes". I think your "hutch" will look great with corbels. I still have to finish the staining process for my corbels, but when they're done, they're going right under this cabinet: (Look, you can even see the corbels by the mixer! Just noticed on preview.) Mumsig (which is really made by Whirlpool) in stainless steel (which ain't all that "stain"-less). Bought it over a year ago, before the remodel was actually underway. But, I'm dying to trade it out for the new Ikea Framtid in black that Ikea has in its 2010 catalog, just for its new, super-mod cosmetic treatment (it's actually the same exact oven)! I think the Framtid is ultra-modern-chic with just the right hint of retro (the round analog clock)! Anyway, the oven I have is very functional. Cooks well. I use the convection settings a lot. Kinda small (it's only a 24" oven), but that's what we wanted--small. But, aside from no self-cleaning feature (not available from Ikea in a 24" oven), it looks and works great!...See Morejessicaml

Note: if you do this you'll lose a tiny bit of rear counterspace clearance unless you have deep cabinets (these are 30" lowers and 18" uppers). And if you do, tall people will not see them at all, unless there is seating nearby or they are viewed from the side. All in plain sight to me, but the spouse could see none of it. Hm. These were sized to fit a mug I broke right before the remodel finished. Hm!

10 months agoI used iron shelf brackets from Amazon combined with a piece of red oak to make these corbels for my more traditional kitchen with ORB hardware.
