Trash To Treasure

Whatcha doin'???

I mean what project are you working on right now? My last project was taken away from me and done by my DH!(Not that I mind, at all! LOL) He took an old wooden medicine cabinet that had been my grandmother's, sanded and repainted it for me and hung it in our bathroom.

I found a photo of Grandma and me made when I was about six. He enlarged it for me and I have it sitting on top of the cabinet.

What about you? Wht's your latest project?

Your medicine cabinet and precious photo both sound great! Doesn't it feel good when you can get something accomplished?

I bought two small round tables I want to use as end tables in the living room. They were stained black and then painted white on top and distressed. I want them to be an antique walnut color. On another forum, I heard you could strip furniture with oven cleaner. Tried that, and it did not work at all. So, I used paint and stain stripper on them, with mixed and limited results. Now I have an expensive mess. I am tempted to throw them out and keep looking for tables that are already done in the finish I like (have been looking for a few years). My alternative is to have them professionally dipped. I shudder to think how expensive that would be!

Wish I could borrow your husband to come and take them over for me! LOL

Oh, trust me, he doesn't do professional quality work - he just has a strong arm and (I hope!) a weak spot for me! LOL

Have you tried airplane stripper? Seems like it's stronger than a lot of the others.

annie1992 - yes! I wasn't sure how it was spelled. They and my brother had taken a trip to Italy and France and they briefly were in Switzerland for a bit and I knew they had come across this dish somewhere in that trip so I didn't know whether it was French or Swiss! But they did have a special gizmo with little heating plates that sits in the center of the table and they made all these special dishes. Everyone has a little pie wedge shaped plate, and you heap on whatever you want from the assortment of meats and veggies and then top it with the special cheese - where the name comes from, pop it in the machine and it melts the cheese and heats everything up - it was like fondue but with little plates that grill instead of spearing foods and dipping. It was a lot of fun, but it looked like it was also a ton of work getting all the individual foods ready!! But they always do something fun and unique like that for Mother's Day. We're a crowd that loves to cook and loves to eat and loves to travel, so these events are usually used as an opportunity to try a new ethnic cuisine or recreate something someone had in their travels. And I love it because I get to enjoy everything and not lift a finger for a change! Lisa

My plans sound pretty boring compared to yours! DS and DIL are going to a parenting class all day tomorrow so will go over to babysit at 9 tomorrow and play with GD all day. Think we will stay over there until after her nap since she won't go to sleep here--there she has to stay in the crib--here she gets up to explore! Ha ha Then just need to do the usual grocery shopping and then a trip to Lowes for some more bark for side garden area--want to cover all the dirt so dog won't track in as much mud when the rains start! Already have a couple of plants I need to get planted. So sorry you are having to miss DB's wedding. Did you get all the pics ready for the cd? Hopefully they will take lots of pics for you and DM to see! Sorry your Mom is having such a bad time of it--bet she feels so bad that she has to miss the wedding too. Let us know if you see any cute or clever ideas at the craft show, okay? Make sure you take your vitamins--and wear your running shoes too! You are one busy lady! ;o) Luvs

Wow! That's beautiful, Squirrlley! Love the colors...and the pattern! I've been collecting mosaic table top pictures, too. Hope to get to making a small table soon. Kelly: Those 27 years will FLY by!!! Especially during the summers! :) I retired after 23 years teaching... but decided to go back. Am working on a 2nd retirement. Hmmmm... but now that I'm REALLY having fun with the mosaics.. might want to stop earlier. OH... forgot about the $$$ involved. Oh well!!! :) Meanwhile... went to my favorite little TS yesterday... bought a couple of plates to crack... but on the way out saw an OLD skateboard. It was a $1.00. So... I grabbed it up, paid, and put it with the TBM stuff. My daughter's almost step-son is an avid skate boarder so I'm planning to mosaic it for him for Christmas. More added to the list! Katie

Debby, I am usually supposed to get 4 days in a row. I work 4 12 hour night shifts, then off 4. I cant remember the last time it worked out like that, but I try to get everything done on my first day so I can do NOTHING for the rest of them. My first day this time was a weird one sleep wise. I had to get up in the middle of the day, usually my middle of sleep. My parents are going out of town, and wanted to bring all the Thanksgiving ingredients to my house. Fine. Then they INSISTED I go out to lunch with them. Never mind that it would be like me waking them up at 1 am to go to Waffle house. Anyway, after I fulfilled that obligation i couldn't get back to sleep until that evening, then I slept like the dead until yesterday morning, which I suppose is why I had so much energy. Today my plans are to go get some dirt to finish filling in the trenches I dug yesterday, and maybe some more tulip bulbs if they have them. I still have room in the massive trench I dug yesterday. I hope I can finish all that up today. Then rest until tommorow. I am planning to put my Christmas display up at work tommorow night, and in the morning I need to go get the last items I need. Some painters tape, wrapping paper, for sure some more lights, and whatever else catches my eye. Then I will take it up there and drop it off before going home and getting some sleep. It takes 2 nights to put everything up. If nothing else, my house is clean and we both have clean underwear. And that's something I guess......

For the past week or two I've been trying to get some Christmas decorations painted and decorated. I've had some of them for 3 years now...wooden ones, plaster ones, ceramic ones, resin ones, and some that I want to make. Some of these I have are mine but I have some that I promised my two daughters and a sister that I would paint for them! Good grief, this is worst than I thought...I better paint faster!
