Transition from One Room to Another Room - Looking for Photos

This has been cross-posted in the kitchen forum. Hoping for more photos and ideas.

Our kitchen adjoins our family room. It had a half wall between the two and we've removed that to open it up more, so it's more like a great room. The only thing is, now I will have to paint both rooms the same color because there is no transition from one room to the other. We have only just gutted both rooms, so it's not too late to incorporate new ideas. I want to keep an open feel, but thought that I might want to use different shades of paint or at least have that option.

Does anyone have photos of the transition where their kitchen meets another room? Open to all suggestions! Thanks in advance.

I don't have any photos I could show you, but my son's home has a kitchen that opens up into his family room, and they used two different colors very tastefully. The family room is a blue color with a grey tint to it, and the kitchen area is a greyish green. I don't know the names of the colors, but the overall effect is lovely. They used the line of the back splashes underneath the cabinets as the dividing line between the two rooms. I think this can be done if the colors are complementary to each other as theirs are.

Ahah! now I see..thank you! Here's what I would do (and have done before)... Make a frame out of a matching piece of jamb molding (the trim around the doors) that completely fills the space above the kitchen door, and put a mirror in it. That will give you the architectural effect of a transom over the door, and provide a clear "DMZ" between the entry color and the LR wall. It will look intentional and more graceful than just a line. It would be even more effective to do the same thing over the other two doors in the entry space as well. Then you also open up the space visually, and throw more light around. I think it would look terrific, for a minimum of effort and money.

Cozy - Kid Friendly. Mixed room use I suppose. Kids dungeon and secondary media room. Paint should be on the lighter side of coziness and not too dark-cozy. There is the white quartersawn stairs, with the walnut built in running that bank of the wall. Add the flooring and that is lot of wood to contend with. Aside from the custom cabs being built, all the other furnishings was sorta dependent on paint - the upholstery at least. I know ya'll have said you can always repaint, but I'm more the latter. For example, the built in that is running underneath the stairs, the top 1/3 of it is open cubed shelving. Whatever paint I paint it now, will be the color that is there till it get's ripped out or professionally disassembled. You will be able to see through this open shelving. I suppose I could hire someone with long arms and is flexible to repaint between the open spaces. Same goes for the furniture. It will probably be a large sectional with chaise and 2 or 3 chairs - upholstry tbd . If ya'll are wondering what's up with the tiled floor - we got flooded, I ended up ripping 10" Wide Plank flooring and lower 2' of rock. I don't want the space to feel like a waterproof pool with the new tiled floor ;-)

I have sort of the same thing but without the curve. Just a straight line down then cut at a 45 degree angle to the wall. If you think that might look a little *off*, then perhaps you could either take it straight from the wall down (past the curve) and finish with an L to the other wall. Or - take it from the end of the cabinet to the wall. I can tell from your tiles that that almost lines up exactly. Except I'm not sure if that would cut off your kitchen area too much. Play around with a large measuring stick or two.

I suspect very few of us knew our styles when we first got married, and many of us keep fine-honing it all our lives, so you're in excellent company. I love all the great ideas and pictures posted here. I think you'll find some fun inspiration in your local library in magazines and books, and by googling key words and clicking on "images." You can save your favorite pictures to folders on your computer marked "living room," "bedroom," "curtains," etc. Paint is always a cheap way to dramatically change the look and feel of a room. You might even ask the guys at the paint store if you can look at their pile of paints people rejected -- they sell those very cheap, like about $3/gallon, and you may find just the color you want. It's worth a shot. Check out your local Craigslist. You'll find everything under the sun on it and lots of bargains if you're willing to wade through some junk that makes you laugh. You can go see things before you buy, you save lotsa dough, you meet folks and make them happy, and your $ doesn't go to some big box store. Plus, you can sell things you have you don't love and buy things you like better. It's free to advertise there. If you're looking for something specific, check it every day because the biggest bargains get sold fastest. Take pictures of your rooms. You'd be amazed what you see in pictures that you didn't see in person, like a picture hung crooked or too high, or an imbalance in your accessories, or dust bunnies, or whatever... but things will jump out at you. Some things are very easy to do yourself to save lots of money, like re-covering dining chairs, refinishing table tops, stripping old furniture and sewing curtains. You'll learn what you love or hate doing by jumping in and trying. There are tons of instructions for all sorts of projects on the web, and plenty of helpful folks all over the Garden Forum. We're on your side, eager to see your before and after pictures, and happy to help any way we can. Post pics and ask your questions. So yes, you CAN change your home's look and add loads of charm on a very tight budget -- many of us here do that -- and there are many charming cottage designs that say "come on in and make yourself at home!"

Right now the rooms are completely gutted down to the studs. Basically the entire space is approximately 13' x 40', about half of the space will be used for each room (13' x 20'). On one of the long 40' walls, there is no real defining architecture that would visually separate the two rooms. There won't be a backsplash or wall cabinets on that wall, just a row of windows over the counter. The only thing I could think of (and still keep it open) was to install molding, otherwise I would have to paint both rooms the same color. I'm doing a white kitchen and was considering white walls, but didn't want to use white in the family room, but was hoping to warm it up a bit more.

We took out our half wall between the kitchen and FR but left short 2' wall because we needed a wall for an outlet and the central vac outlet. At first, I was a little bummed, but now I like it because while the rooms are open to each other, they have some separation. I painted my kitchen a bolder gold color and the FR a lighter gold. We also didn't remove the wall coming down from the ceiling, I can't remember exactly why, but I think it was because we thought the short 2' wall would look odd just sortof sticking out. I wished we had trimmed out the opening, but we couldn't find the same trim as the rest of the house, and it was adding up in costs, so we just left it untrimmed.

I love the before and after pictures of my kitchen. It was so god awful and I have to take all the credit for that lovely garden wallpaper!

Caroleoh - thanks for posting the photos, it's really helpful to see what other people have done. I love the way you opened up the two rooms.

Here's ours (although I don't know if this will help you since we do have a break where we could change the color). We used one shade darker on the color strip for the 2nd coat in the family room (but I sometimes wish I'd gone one more shade darker). Good luck!

We put in a header to divide the space and used 2 different paint colors. I'm not sure if it will work for your floorplan, but here's a pic( sorry for the mess-still under construction).
