Empty space in corner cab behind half moon shelfs

For those of you that a half moon pull out shelf in your corner cabinets.. what did you do , if anything to prevent things from falling behind the shelf. It would be impossible to get back there once my counter tops are put on.

Have the installer angle a piece of plywood across the corner behind the edge of the half moon to block it off.

Yeah.. not on the best terms with my installer at this point.. not loving how they are treating me.. so I was hoping for a self remedy or maybe my contractor can do it

Steve, I realize the hosta varieties I already have are on the small side. They're not ones I was planning on putting on that slope. They're in the backyard bed under some pin oaks, and they're all very new and VERY small. I only mentioned them because I probably won't be buying those same varieties for the slope. I can add divisions from them to that area someday, but it will be years before they're large enough for that. Your suggestions for larger hosta varieties are very helpful, especially since you mentioned the coloring for each one. What I'm really needing help with is some input on how much to put in that space. I obviously want to take away the bare look, but it's not a terribly convenient area to have dense growth. It's not even a safe slope to walk on unless you can clearly see where you're putting your feet (hence the staircase) and I'll still need to be able to climb out there and give everything a buzzcut at the beginning of every winter, if nothing else. I'd like there to be a nice balance between big hosta and smaller varieties as well as any companion plants, but I'm a little lost as to WHAT that balance is exactly.

Some hardware specialty houses have these systems set up. If you can find one, go. Bring a cereal box, a small appliance, some metal bowls, whatever and see how much they hold. Of the two you posted, I prefer the Rev a shelf wood classic because the more you get your shape closer to a rectangle, the more you use the full space of your blind corner. A half-moon loses both corners, including the one you could reach on your own. I have a U-shaped kitchen so I am dealing with two of these corners. As mentioned above, if you can access the back side of this cabinet, you could save a lot of money by creating one cabinet or set of drawers facing into your kitchen. Then have a cabinet that faces the dining room. We did this on one corner. On the other corner, we didn't have that option. We did a two-stage Rev-a-Shelf that I have linked below. I love it. I have 2 lower cabinet corners. I considered the drawer but was told by cabinet company and contractor that they would not maximize space. I didn’t really want a super Susan because I thought they also wasted space, but decided to get one anyway. So I have a super Susan in one corner and just open space in the other, with shelves. I love the super Susan. I was worried that my stuff wouldnt fit there, but I currently have:electric fry pan, blender, hand mixer, marble rolling pin, immersion blender, food saver, pizelle maker, fondue pot, crepe maker. Waffle iron,juicer, mini crock pot, 6 qt multi cooker, and 14 cup food processor, along with bags for vacuum sealer. It’s great! In the other corner are some pots and pans, air fryer, etc. I am happy with what we ended up doing.

@Fori I'm considering having the doors open together because it is less $$ than having a separate cabinet box for the upper-uppers. So it's primarily about saving money. But yeah the stuff I store way up there will be what I don't use/need often--though I also have a decent size pantry closet for things like that. @dan1888 If I can make the sink base smaller, I will. Already did that with the clean-up sink base (not reflected in the images I posted--plus that sink should be an apron-front). Regarding the main prep area, the way I use the kitchen, my main prep will be on the island to right of prep sink, and on main L to left of rangetop. The area between clean-up sink and fridge is for toaster and coffee pot, sandwich-making, etc. (so is the opposite side of the island, where the m/w is). That way we don't get in each other's way. I don't object to the sink being off-center, since it's the window that will be most noticeable from the living room, not the sink. But, if I move the main sink to the right, I have to move the d/w to the left of the sink and probably put the trash on the right side of the sink. Not bad in itself, b/c that makes trash convenient to both workspaces. But it means people will constantly be heading for that corner to reach the trash which seems bad, I think trash is better near the outside of the L. (And, I'd need to make sure cabs are still the same width on either side of the window.) [Edited to reply re the lighting] We have a detailed plan from the architect that includes all the layers of lighting. @Verbo I hear you. I've heard tell about this unicorn--the KD who is not a cabinet salesperson--since my first kitchen reno a long time ago, which I mainly planned myself with excellent input from folks here (and was happy with the outcome, given the constraints I had). I have not yet met that unicorn. The KD working on the current project is supposed to be one of the best, was recommended by my architect, clients love them, etc etc. And still I have no illusions--this person is primarily selling cabinets, and I'm going to be the one to make sure my idiosyncratic needs are met. (The goal of the current location of appliances and sinks is to meet those needs.) I welcome advice, especially when it points out mistakes I might miss. @Mark Bischak Yup. Even so, I think when I posted an earlier version of this kitchen design, I had either not yet met with the KD, or I didn't have a real layout from them yet. Now I do, and still the cabinet arrangement is not set in stone, I'm sure I'll be changing some things. The overall house design is pretty much set, though, which means the windows are set. At least, until we get the builder estimates I expect any day now...

Is this a blind corner cabinet or one that has openings on both sides of the corner (similar to a corner susan)?

I'm assuming a blind corner...

Unfortunately, this problem is one of the big negatives to blind corner cabinets & pullouts...corner susans (super or lazy) that have a wall that follows the contour of the shelves not only use more of the available space but also prevent items from falling off the shelves.

I can only think of three possibilities right now....
1. See if your GC can put up some kind of sturdy, solid wall that follows the contour of the half-moon and is attached to each shelf...not sure what b/c it would have to curve. Perhaps your GC will have an idea.
2. Failing that, see if you can switch out the shelves for something like this D-shaped shelf (b/f the counters are put on).
3. Lastly, could you remove the blind corner contraption altogether and instead install pullout shelves similar to this Base Corner with Sliding Shelves and Pullouts (second pic on the top row).
If it were me & I were forced to have a blind corner, I would prefer #3... (I really prefer a corner susan to a blind corner, though)

buehl, thank you. I think the reason my kd went with the half moon design is due to the door size. I believe she had told me my door is not wide enough for those shelves that pull out. I never did follow up to be sure and let her put in the half moons, never thinking of all the empty space behind it.

Ajard Â IÂm so sorry you are having so many issues. Stick to you guns Â you will regret it in the future if you donÂt. You are paying way too much money to not get it just right. Keep posting and asking questions here so you feel empowered. But make sure you get exactly what you want. Seriously Â in the future when the workers are long gone, you will be proud of yourself if you do and regretful if you do not. DonÂt let anyone intimidate you.

It doesn't have to be anything fancy, just block off the diagonal space thats left over coming to 1/2"-1" from the edge of the shelf. It could be done with two cleats and a piece of plywood. It doesnt need to curve or be fancy. Lazy susans are often part of an octagon cabinet-wise, no curves or anything---this is essentially half a lazy susan. You are just preventing relatively large items (cans etc.) from falling off the shelf an into the space.
These shelves also have a lip on them, so unless you really jerk them or have a stack of something at the back, things don't fall off that easily. Just don't store a stack of light plastic containers back there...I doubt you would anyway.
