What to do with milk boxes / juice boxes

I am trying to not eat wheat to see if that helps the chronic tiredness I've been experiencing. Also cutting back on dairy, only in coffee and occassional cheese. So long and short, I started having almond milk on my rice crispie type cereal. Oh my gosh its good. But the boxes which are kind of like large juice boxes are not recyclable.

I'm going to have a lot of them and they are so nice and sturdy. Any ideas?

I will answer my own question partially: here is a juice box magazine holder. The almond milk cartons are not so colorful and pretty, but they are a bit larger. We have tons of magazines. So once I have another one emptied I will try this.

If they are boxed roses in the square box they are bare root planted in a growing medium. While many suggest removing them from the box and soaking for a few days, I recommend poking holes in the box and soaking the box and all until the box is completely saturated. While in the box, tiny feeder roots have begun to grow. Removing them from the box also removes the feeder roots. The intent of the box is to plant it, box and all, to prevent disturbing the developing roots and eliminate the stress to the plant caused when planting a bare root. But, experience has shown the dry box will still be identifible two-three years down the road. It often contains the roots and prevents them from growing into the surrounding soil. Not so if you poke holes in it and completely saturate the box by soaking. The more surface exposed to the soil, the faster the box decomposes. Those I plant that way are completely decomposed by the end of the first season in the ground. Saturating means water the plant should have is not soaked up by the box. Being wet helps it break down faster also. As a bonus, any feeder roots formed already will not be disturbed lessening transplant shock and stress. Usually new top growth will not be affected or need to be removed. If you plan on keeping the boxed roses for awhile before planting, poke a small hole in the top and water it. The box will become wet and sag some but the growing medium will not dry out. I've seen unsold boxed roses in the original box in mid June, four to five feet tall and blooming. Unlike body bagged roses, boxed roses will root absorbing the nutrients in the growing medium.

Yes, ever since oldest headed off to college, I have been a box saver, and DH is even worse. She would need something mailed, and so if I had a box on hand, I could mail it right away. A special dress for a dance, her baseball glove, her costume for a party, etc. Kept that up through the next 2 in college, graduate school, and law school. I mail them a baked cake for their birthdays when they are in school, and that has to be a very special size, so sometimes I have to BUY that box. I hate spending good money for boxes, so I save them. With the last one finishing school this spring, the habit is no longer necessary, but it is ingrained, especially with DH. I have been known to supply boxes to friends who are moving!!!

You know, Anj, I actually like using my small brushes best too. I just feel like I have more control. I do use the big flats for basecoating larger areas and sometimes for shading. But my small and medium round and my small and medium angle brushes are my favs. I think it is fine to use whatever you are most comfortable with. I've actually got two brush containers--one for the brushes I use most, and one for the other brushes I might want to use someday. Been thinking about eliminating some of them actually. I tend to hang onto everything--even when it's not used. LOL

I've also heard them called a light box. They were pretty common in the 70's - our house has them in most bathrooms, the master bedroom closet and the kitchen. They aren't popular right now, but we preferred the amount of light it gives out and appearance to the many holes we would need for recessed lights to get the light we want in the kitchen. Ours goes well with our kitchen's transitional lines, IMO. Ours is as cawaps described. A box framed by ceiling joists. It's twice as wide as the space between a pair of joists so their are sistered joists on either side of the box to take the load of a joist that ends in the side of the box. It would be a major structural change to raise the ceiling to the height of the top of the box because all the joists would have to change. These are not extended soffits. (Our old kitchen had soffits at the top of the old cabinets which we removed.) Ours has a minimal metal frame around the box and dividing it into sections and plastic panels to diffuse the light. DH replaced the ballasts and fixtures in the box with ones that take newer fluorescent bulbs. I think he said that the older 70's bulbs were being phased out and the new bulbs and ballasts were better. We have 5 pairs of bulbs but with the old fixtures we had more.

Well --- shame on you ! You did it again --- I thought I'd google juice box crafts and get some ideas for you . Instead --- I got side tracked to a big old craft site with tons of projects & instructions on it ...... and ..... I have yet ANOTHER Want to make list a mile long !!! *Sigh*

Take a peek -- there's alot of things that cost nearly nothing to make .

Oh my gosh, what a site Too much!
Of course I zeroed in on the things painted with pebeo paint. Maybe there is hope for flower centers after I use up the pretty ones you sent me!

BTW, I cut the top of the almond milk container and am using it as a compost bucket for the moment.

I just got through the wire crafting section ..... hours and hours of bookmarking info . I saw purses made out of the cartons .... then I got side tracked ~~~ LOL sorry !
I'll keep thinking .

**I have pebeo paint ,too . The most I've done with it was painting faces & markings on stained glass birds. Now I have to look there ,too .

Kathy I think we are a lot alike in our crafting obsessions.

Its really bad that Hurricane Irene washed away Joann's. the nearest Michaels is 60 mi away. I have no where to buy craft or sewing supplies. The local Walmart is wanting. K-mart is closed from Irene too.

My DD is milk protein intolerant, so I go thru lots of those soy/rice/almond milk containers.

1) Cut the tops off and use as paint holders - some hold the paint, others hold the dirty brushes.

2) I'm saving a bunch of them and I plan on winter sowing in them.

They eventually end up in the trash, but they do get reused before being trashed.

They make good seed/plant starters. They hold enough soil to get good root growth on the plants before setting them out. And you tear off the carton when planting, no tipping plants out of pots, losing soil or damaging roots.
I also use them them with some of my concrete projects. Among other things they make good molds for edging "bricks". I have a friend who filled them with concrete and used the resulting "brick" vertically to support and hide an ugly raised bed in her garden.
