Painting over oiled oak finish

Has anybody had experience painting over oiled oak? I have an oiled oak dresser that really needs to be refinished. I would love to do a decorative painting technique like crackling on it, but don't know if I should do something to the piece before I start painting. Any suggestions?

Are you planning to paint the whole dresser and if so what kind of paint are you using? If you are using an oil base enamel,just clean the piece with a good all purpose cleaner like Murphy's Oil Soap.Sand any rough spots and paint.If you are using acrylic or latex paint(which I prefer)you will need to clean the piece with a product such as trisodium phosphate or some other cleaner that will remove all traces of the oil.Acrylic and latex will not adhere to oil.If using trisodium phosphate follow directions on the container carefully and wear protective clothing.Sand any rough areas and apply a sealer like Kilz.A hint about painting.Use a small sponge roller rather than a brush.It will leave a smooth finish with no brush marks and painting will go faster.You can use a brush for hard to get to areas.........Lillie

Thanks for your help, Lillie. I haven't had much experience in this field, but it sounds like going with an oil based acrylic might work better in this case. I'm going to use your suggestion about using a roller as well as I hate brush marks.
I think I'll start with the side that won't show, just to see how it comes out :-)

Enamel paint doesn't really signify what kind of paint it is, just that the paint is a washable paint, meaning that a protective skin forms on top of the paint. Enamel paints could be latex, acrylic, oil or lacquer really. I would use BIN primer (shellac based) or any other number of acrylic primers that are designed to stick to slick surfaces (bonding). I would then topcoat with a 100 percent high quality acrylic paint, probably in satin. Some perfer semi-gloss. The reason I would choose acrylic is because it won't yellow like oil or lacquer or crack in the joints as easily.

In my opinion, oil based primer and latex primer, if both are high quality, should bond equally well. The real reason I suggest using BIN is because it will bond better than both, plus it will kill the water stains. I'm guessing that you have water stains because that is what usually happens when condensation from the glass leaks onto the wood. With the sun coming through the glass panes, it is like a magnifying glass on an ant, which will cook the moisture that is sitting on your wood and it will not take long for that moisture to eat through any finish that is on the wood and then eat through the stain layer. This is why it is so important to have the humidity level set so that moisture does not collect on your glass panes. BIN is actually a shellac based product, which means it is not latex or oil based. You would clean your equipment with denatured alcohol, it dries super fast and is pretty smelly...probably stinks worse than oil based. It really sounds like you have some cheap windows to me. If you can't stop the condensation issue and the windows stick when you close them, these are signs. No paint is going to stick long term if a painted surface rubs against raw wood and also painted surfaces should never touch other painted surfaces. What you want is the painted surfaces of your windows touching weatherstips when they are closed tight. I would suggest sanding the windows until you can close them without wood rubbing against wood. I realize you may not be able to do this with every window because they may be too tight because of any number of reasons, but that is where I would start. What is the brand of the windows? Are they double hung style or crankout type casement windows?

Thanks. I was hoping thats not what was going to be suggested though. I've got two huge rooms and would hate to have to sand them, not to mention I don't know whats underneath. Its an older house so there was probably lead paint used somewhere down the line. Is there any way of just using some type of primer that would do the trick?

Painting dry wood... over oil?

Thank you for this input. Here are some photos of the lamp, which is one of the items I am thinking about. Recently stripped (and needing one more session, I realize), this wood is so dry that my fingers itch to oil it, like the urge to water a drought-stricken plant. But I suppose the cumulative message of the posts above is that if the wood isn't split yet, then its apparent deficit is a figment of my imagination... and that it might split if I do start oiling it, I suppose. The reason I mentioned the sewing machine oil... a few years ago I was having a chair re-upholstered and refinishing the wood myself to reduce the cost. The upholsterer suggested the sewing machine oil, which I did - it made for a beautiful matte finish that is still standing up well. The oil is colourless, odorless, and leaves no residue. My thought here was that it might be possible, with such a light oil, to oil a bit before painting... because the stripped wood hasn't left a colour that I like enough to keep. Anyway, perhaps the pictures will help to clarify why I have this urge to oil rather than just paint. Thanks for the assistance, KarinL

Oops, I meant an oil based enamel, not acrylic. I'm getting my paints mixed up.

Do not scrub with Murphy's - it's OILY and the paint will not stick.

Scrup it with TSP to get the oil off, then prime and paint.

TSP is trisodium phosphate,right? I knew there was another name for it.LOL Other all purpose grease cutting cleaners will work also,like "409",the orange cleaners,etc. and are easier and safer to use than the TSP.You could also use a steel wool with the cleaner to help remove any oily buildups.
Can you put the crackle finish on oil based enamel? I'm not sure on that one so you might want to check that out.I know the "crackle" step is water base.
I'm anxious to see the finished product so be sure and post a picture when you are done............Lillie

I did find a method online that allows the use of oil-based paint to do a crackle-type finish. It involves a layer of oil paint as a base coat, followed by a layer of water-based white glue, like Elmers. Then you go over it with a layer of milk-paint, followed by an oil-based glaze after it's dry.
I like this idea as milk paint colors are usually nice historic looking colors, and there won't be as many to choose from so it will make the choice easier. That's where I have usually have the most trouble, and it will be easier to choose from 20 colors than from 1000 :-)

I'm going to try a sample board first to make sure it will look the way I want it to. I have a piece of oiled oak in the basement that came from my son's old desk, I think it was a shelf that never got used. I'll treat that to the kind of cleaning you all recommended, and then test the painting technique on it.
