I'm tweaking now and need advice on marble, microwaves and doors

Hi there, I used to be on this forum a lot and still check in from time to time. I am getting close to being done with our kitchen, but of course am "tweaking" things. The things I am stuck on are:

1. Whether to move the microwave off of the counter and where it should go if I do.

2. Whether to build in this cool Gothic window over my stove

3. Whether to change my countertop from wood to Carrera marble honed.

I would love any help/guidance that you can give. I know everyone has different taste, but I love white kitchens and hopefully the following pictures will highlight the areas I am trying to work on. There is a sample of the carrera on the island.

Just as a side note, the side of the kitchen with the glass cabinets was something I built using IKEA Lidi cabinets.

Any guidance on this would be most appreciated :)

Is it all ikea lidi? the glass door hutch this is AMAZING!! you're kitchen is amazing. very serene, and warm. i wouldn't change a thing!!

well, the microwave, yes, if you could find a concealed spot for it, sure put it away. but it's not horrible where you have it and it's white so it kinda goes. can you put it in one of the glass cabs? or what's on the black cabs in the other room?

the gothic window, not sure if that's the proposed set up or what? i need a close up!

and no, don't change the wood. it's beautiful!! it blends in the floor and the chairs.

I love your kitchen! I would not change the wood on the island. The wood is one of the things that makes your kitchen so warm and inviting. I would find a way to take the microwave off the counter. I love the Gothic window. But I wouldn't put it over the stove. I'd move it to a wall in your kitchen (if there a blank wall) or even put it over your window over your sink. But it doesn't feel like it belongs over your stove. (A new stainless vent hood with a big more presense might be great over your range.) I love, love, love your striped walls.

I think the house will look great with all shingle siding, high quality 6 over 1 or 4 over 1 windows like in the drawing, the garage doors on the side, and substantial, well-proportioned decorative trusses under the gables. I think (except for the siding choices) the photos where these elements are missing look much worse than the elevation drawing. If you are looking for simple and timeless I think the roof lines might be a little busy and the decorative trusses might be a bit much, but in 2008 they look good to me. re: those dream picures I like them too. Unofortunately I don't think you will achieve that effect if brick siding strains the budget. A poster called allison0704 (?) built a gorgeous home that reminds me of you photos. She achieved that effect, but her $/sf had to have been very high. I suggest you look at shingle-style homes. They are more authentic becasue they are an American style, they are timeless (as much as anything can be), and you can choose various levels of finishes and degree of interior decoration without sacrificing the overall effect. For example, moderate price maple cabs with a bit of a shine from a big box store would look OK in a simple shingle style house with painted trim. They would look really cheap and out of place in a grand manor. If stained woodwork is a dealbreaker for you this might not be a great option. Have you seen that Stern dream home from Southern Living that MIghty Anvil has posted in the past? Check that out.

Speaking as someone who's been through the good, the bad and the ugly in terms of remodeling: I'd definitely demand an itemized quote and a written contract,specifying everything that is to be done and establishing a delivery as well as payment schedule. You pay as the work gets done (or each phase of it). Not before. In most states the law allows the contractor to charge up to 1/3 upfront, for material and payroll, so it would be very difficult to get more than that from me, without explaining and itemizing. I'd get quotes for more than one contractor before signing up for anything. Ask neighbors, friends and coworkers for referrals. Check all the bidders for compliance with state certification, licenses, insurance etc...(Most official state websites allow you to check contractors over the internet - go to your local government site and search for words like contractor or consumer protection) Ask the contractors for references and actually check them. Check the local BBB chapter to see if there is any complaints filed against that company and try to find out how many years they've been in business. Most home improvement companies go out of business in about 5 years. So if the company is in business longer than that, chances are they know how to conduct business and will be there for many years still to honor the warranty they give you on their services. The services you are contracting, depending of the finishing materials, fixtures, embellishments and appliances used, might be well worth the $96K. I also found out that the "cheap" can cost you more down the road. Unreasonably low quotes, might be a sign that the contractor is either about to deliver a lousy job or has no intention to deliver it at all. However, no one would be able to get 96K out me, without a very, beyond reasonable doubt good reason.

I am new to this site so I will try to scan my layout and figure out to post the proposed design. I appreciate the comments and suggestions. Is there a way to directly respond to each posting or is posting like this the only way? I had really hoped to avoid having the microwave on the counter because my current counters have basically been "unusable" for decades because they are storage space instead of work space. The model ankh posted is interesting: it might eliminate the need for a 28 inch corner cabinet. My big concern is the size of that cabinet especially after I drew it out on tag-board. There are several models that will fit on a 12 inch deep shelf...my current one will, and I am okay with the lack of options in a small microwave. My husband is the one with "issues" with the blind corners and corner access in a 90 degree corner. I have read all the threads on them here. I was hoping to find a solution that would appease him and eliminate a 28" wide corner cabinet because of my concerns about its size. Does anyone have a corner cabinet this size? Does anyone have a corner cabinet that is 16-18" wide? Does anyone have a microwave in a lower cabinet...mine would have to be in the small island...I only have two places other than the corner with more than 12 inches of space. I need some input on how these option work and effective use of space. Several years ago, when we were redoing the basement family room, I repeatedly asked my hubby about running cable outlets. Each time, he said "no, don't bother, the cable is only for the internet service." Of course, shortly after finishing the room, teenage daughter sets up her video game stuff and wants to move the tv to the adjacent wall. Hubby than asks me why if we can put in another cable outlet on that wall. I said sure but that's more money and that's why I asked you that question multiple times. So, he said to me "I know I said that, but why didn't you just do it anyway?" My husband is a consultant...he can think of many different ways to backpedal from a definite answer or to provide a intelligent-sounding meaningless answer to darn near any direct question. One time, my partner attempted to clarify one of his vague points..."So, I understand that you want the gutters to be the top priority, is that right?" "Well, yes, that is important and I would like to have it done soon but there's several other items that need to be done also. I don't think you should stop working on the current items just to get the gutter project finished" As always, it reminds me that the FBI does not have the 21,453 Most Wanted list instead of the 10 Most Wanted list. There's only so much space at the top of the priority list and someone has to make that list.

Hi, well you all are saving me lots if money!
Momof3, only the desk area and glass cabinet half of the kitchen is ikea lidi. I saved about 6000 using ikea and I love the look and quality! The other half is home depot oak cabs painted white. They were here when we bought the house- I painted them. I'm glad you like it, thanks for the compliments!

Do you think a white micro range hood would look ok over the range or would it look funny because it doesn't match the stainless?

Francoise, thank you as wl. I think you are right about the window. I will see if I can put it anywhere else. I don't think it will fit over the sink. I painted the stripes, it's not hard, just need painters tape, a measuring tape and a level. Choosing the colors is the hardest part!

What a gorgeous kitchen!!
If you had nothing for counters now and did not mind patina, I would have voted for marble, but I am a wood counter LOVER and yours is stunning. I can't even imagine pulling that out...not only because of cost, but why remove something so wonderful and warm!!!??!!!

If you use the microwave a lot, leave it where it is. If you don't and can place it somewhere that simply opening a door allows it to be used, then I would do that.

Love the Gothic window but not sure what I'd do with it.

what kind of wood is that counter....I have been on this forum too long and DH has been dragging out our build for so long---I started out wanting wood, then stainless, now marble, but looking at your wood counter, I'm back to wood....

I love that antique window.... but it's not working for me over the range. It needs a higher ceiling, I think.

I think the microwave is more functional where it is than over the range.

Beautiful kitchen -- I'm not sure I'd tweak anything!

Wallycat, the wood island top is birch, which has held up well. We've had it for a few years now and it is a pretty hard wood that needs no maintenance.

I guess I will return the window today. I am kind of in love with it, but the consensus is that it looks not quite right.

I am torn about the microwave over the stove. Not sure I will like the look in this kitchen and am not crazy about it being over the stove with kids using it. I guess if I move it, it would have to be a microwave drawer and sacrifice storage somewhere. It is very functional where it is now. I wish I had built it into the island when I had that made. THat is the hard thing about doing a kitchen in stages.
