Need crackle paint formula

I know I've read it here, but do you think I can find it now that I need it, no of course not. Need recipe for crackle paint application. Sue/Teacupgarden

I just put on a coat of Elmers and a coat of paint while it's still wet and sit back and watch the fun.

You can use water down hide glue, paint it over latex paint, let dry till tacky then paint with your second color (top coat). Use single strokes with the direction you want to go, do not try to touch up the paint with more strokes, it will mess up the crackle effect.

Thanks for the replies. Saw them after the fact, but basically what you said is what I was told, by BM. I did beg the apartment complex where I saw the paint to show me the can--sure enough, no paint name. I did the next best thing and dipped a paint stir stick into it and took it to be matched. All for nothing. While it was hubby's fav paint in-place, it didn't translate well to our house. We're going with SW Blonde (I have to make it final tomorrow morning). So, can you recommend a ceiling color for SW Blonde? 2-story foyer and 10' elsewhere. 3-piece crown. I was going to use Ivoire (one up from Blonde), but the BM guy said to always go 2 colors away (up, down, or sideways) from the color on the paint strip. Huh? Is that only for BM paint or does that go across the board? Thanks!

What company made the original color? Take a sample of the paint into a good paint store and match it to what's there and then look at darker shades of the same. If you feel you can't eyeball it, the paint store employees should be able to. It's possible the fan deck with that paint strip was not put together with degrees of saturation of the same color . This is something our resident expert, Funcolors, has mentioned numerous times here. If you can post a really good photo of the paint color, someone on the Home Decorating forum may be familiar with it. There is some amazing talent and knowledge over there.

I don't know if you have done a lot of faux finishes, but bar stools is not a good start for a crackle finish. It would be difficult to explain why but it has to do with the legs and the rounds. I would spray paint bar stools an decidedly different color and no crackle here. I think it not only is very difficult but will bring down the look of your room and devalue what you are trying to accomplish. I don't think that is true of all crackle finishes as they are great in some locations, just not this one. JMHO, flame me, flame me but I think you need to go with a strong other color in solid paint. Do I see black on your frames on the wall? Black will give your room another dimension and bulk it up as it needs that. It will give it the look it deserves.

I have never used hide glue and i have an old table i want to crackle the top on.

Elmer's wood glue worked best for me just water it down a touch!!

A lady who does the faux finish classes at our local Sherwin Williams swears by wallpaper paste for a crackle medium. Put on between your paint colors, she claims it works better than the special "crackle" products.
