how big a prep sink on a 9 ft. by 4.5 ft. island?
Comments (11)My island is about 3x7 and my prep sink is 15+x15+. With a larger island, I'd go to at least the 17x17. I was thinking possibly 21 or 24 inches. I wouldn't go larger than that, but having a little more room gives you more flexibility. A larger space makes it easier to dump out hot water without worrying about a splash problem. It also makes it possible for more than one prepping task to be handles at the same time. For any size space, I would be concerned that the 14x17, if it has much of a radius at the bottom, you might not be able to set large pots or such flat on the bottom if you needed to. My prep sink is in a 30 base with a disposal and there is plenty of room for our pet foods and supplies in the cabinet below -- with the dry dog food in a container that would be a decent size trash container if you don't 'put a pullout next to the sink base....See Moreprep sink size and island size - how big did you go?
Comments (7)My prep sink is in a corner cabinet in the "U" that houses the Prep & Cooking Zones, so I can't discuss the island first-hand. However, I can say that our 15-3/4" square (interior dimensions) sink is as small as I would go - I sometimes wish it were bigger - more like 18" square would have been better. If you can fit a 21" sink base with an 18" to 19" wide sink in it, I think you will be happier. With an island over 5' wide, I think you will have plenty of space for at least an 18" sink base with as big a sink as can fit (a 16" wide sink should definitely fit). I would even consider a 6" or 9" cabinet b/w the end of the island and the sink to give you a little room on the side of the sink next to the end - less likely to knock something off onto the floor as well as a bit of landing space. (You could store cutting boards in a 6" cabinet.) 5'8" = 68" 1.5" overhang + 6" cabinet + 18" cabinet + 41" cabinet + 1.5" overhang That gives you 42" to 45" of workspace on one side or the sink and 8" to 9" on the other side (assuming an undermount sink & counting the counter overhangs). BTW...you say your island is 36" deep - is that at the shallowest ends or the deeper center (the curve)? In general, a 36" deep island with standard 24" deep base cabinets + decorative door panel on the back of the cabinets leaves you with only a 9.5" overhang - far too shallow for real seating. If that's just the ends and the center is deeper at the top of the curve, I hope it goes to 41.5" deep in the center there is at least one seat with the minimum recommended overhang (15"). 41.5" = 1.5" overhang + 24" deep cabinet + 1" decorative end panel + 15" overhang...See MoreHow to fit so many faucets behind a prep sink.
Comments (3)Good morning! I woke up a little too early also, so take this for what it cost you! While I am very intrigued by the cool look of the sink, and especially the idea that there would be more undercab space, I'm glad I have a deeper sink for rinsing veggies because of the amount of splashing that goes on. The spray/pull down is great, and I think you can arrange placement wherever it suits you wrt location of the sink (corner or mid-cab run, eg) and how you might best use it. Ours is on the corner of the island, and I have way too many items jammed along one side to have many options for placement, but I put the faucet on the inner back corner so I'd be less likely to whack into it on the way by, and because I had to snug it up next to the back edge of the sink and wanted to be able to put the faucet at an angle to keep it from splashing out the front. Just my situation and some things to consider. I also use my prep sink for washing hands as I come in from the garden, or DH/DS come in from the shop (I know, a lot of you are disgusted by that, but I'm so happy they actually wash now that I just don't worry), draining pasta (this would not work for me with a shallow sink), etc. I can also wash a few dishes from the range in it. It is my humble opinion that you will probably have a more useful sink and fewer issues with splashing if you go a little deeper. I love my pulldown, btw, but it requires yet another hole! Hope that helped!...See MoreGourmet Kitchen Design Help with Peninsula Seating and Prep Island
Comments (36)9" sounds better--I misunderstood the measurement of the island depth on the last plan you'd posted. There are many pics of cooktops under windows (I linked some above), and a few GW members have done the same. Angie_diy and cotehele are two that I recall. You might do a search, and message them to find out how they feel about the issue. If it gives you a better layout, I think it would be fine, and although glass shows spatters, it is durable--more durable than my bead-board backsplash. I would assume that any solid surface behind the hood would help contain the steam and grease plume better than the open cooktop first considered. Where would that grease have gone? I've never had a cooktop under a window, though, so I can't add any first-hand experience. One GW discussion/pros and cons cotehele (and a few others) weighed in on this discussion...See Moreontariomom
