B&B in/near Williamsburg

My wife and I are planning a weekend trip to Williamsburg, VA to celebrate our first anniversary. We would like to find a nice B&B for our brief stay. We are planning to go in early November when the rate go down.

Thanks for any advice.

We've stayed at Governor's Trace - the closest B&B to Colonial Williamsburg - a short 1/2 block away to the historic district (near Christiana Campbell's Tavern). The room was lovely with a fireplace - which they light in cool weather. They serve a lovely candlelit breakfast in your room with beautiful serving pieces that changed each day, all coordinating bedding and decor, thick terry cloth robes, iced beverage when you check-in - a totally convenient and lovely B&B. There were only two things we did not like: 1. No television in the room (we stayed 4 or 5 nights and missed the t.v. - this might not bother you newlyweds). 2. No access to the kitchen because the owners live in that part of the house - we bought a little styrofoam cooler to keep water in the room. I'd highly recommend Governor's Trace - congrats on your anniversary.

Ideas for frugal use of soft B&B pickles?
Q

I definitely need some calcium chloride for the next round of pickles. These are from 06 so it's not too surprising that they're mushy! I cut my 2008 bread and butter pickles into thicker slices and ended up with a texture more to my liking. So far I've pureed one jar of them and mixed with catsup and some additional spices to make sloppy joes. They were okay but a *little* on the "weird" side. My younger son said, "Hey, what's this whitish-greenish seed looking thing??" (I think it was a mustard seed!) and my elder son said, "I don't know, but I smell pickles!" LOL! Thanks for all the suggestions for ways to use these. The peas, pickles, and cheese salad sounds kind of, how shall I say....yucky! :-D I appreciate the idea, however, and just might find myself intrigued enough to try it some day! I don't really do macaroni salad, but potato salad is a thought, as are the deviled eggs. I have chopped up sweet pickles and put them into tuna salad in the past, so that could be another option. I've never eaten sweet pickles on a green salad--could be interesting! The tip about pickling the beets with the leftover brine sounds good, since I also have a couple pints of home canned beets lurking in the closet!

Osakazuki- leaf size varying in B&B'd and boxed trees?
Q

I'd assume it to be due to as simple an explanation as root development - boxed/containered maples just do not have the ability for similar root development and expansion as do those that are field grown and therefore would be expected to have dwarfed/slowed growth, both in size of plant as well as foliage. Once planted in the ground and established, the boxed maples should assume a more typical growth pattern. And yes, 'Osakazuki' can be expected to develop a very good fall color in part shade. And so one does not offend anyone's sensibilities, if you do not write out 'Japanese', please just use the initial 'J' as opposed to any other abbreviation for that term.

Virginia's own Ghost Town (near Williamsburg)

That's fascinating! It's mind-boggling that they had the knowledge and ability to move homes back then. Our ancestors were awesome. When I look at the architecture and millwork in old buildings, I can't believe what they accomplished with their primitive tools. There is a lot of history in our commonwealth. I love reading the history of our little VA town, which was settled in 1738, and saw a lot of action in the Revolutionary War and Civil War.

Anyone near Williamsburg, Va get some Compton's oak acorns?
Q

I know that more than likely the trees have already dropped their acorns a week or 2 ago, But,m I am hoping someone has got a couple extra acorns from the Compton';s oak in Williamsburg, Va. My source (Mossy oak natives) is out of stock. I just may not be able to get any until my tree from Mossy oak natives bears it's own acorns, likely in a couple or few years. But, if anyone has gotten any acorns from the Compton's oak, I may be interested.

We stayed in the Alexander Spotswood Suite - king bed and wood burning fireplace. I think it has been about 4 years since we were there and we paid $125 or $135 a night or so - I'd bet it is no more than $160-$175 a night, but you'll have to check. You are certainly not paying much considering the convenience and how nice it is. Their website is www.governorstrace.com. They also have package deals that include tickets to Colonial Williamsburg, etc. You can call or email them for rates. It is a lovely B&B. There are lots of inexpensive places to stay near CW - there is a Hampton Inn within walking distance that is about $90 a night.
