Ashcraft here are a few plants I grow for the hummingbirds and are used by them. Like Donna your hummingbrid populattion could be the greates in August and September when they are on their migration sout for the year. A plus with these plants is that butterflies will use them too. 4 O'clock Purple Coneflower Truks cap' Lions ear Black and blue salvia (for sure) Greggiis Shrimp plant Mexican bush sage (blooms in late summer in time for migrants) Honeysuckles(goldflame, coral, and Alabama crimson) Davie 'verty' cuphea Lady in red salvia (annual) Subrotunda salvia (annual) Yvonne's salvia (annual) Cannas (Robert Kemp, Peach Giantum There are many others but you will not go wrong with these. Other than the ones I have noted as annuls are perinnals and unless we have an expremely hard freeze here in zone 8 will come back year after year. The annuals will reseed. It is also easy to save the seed from them.

All of my feeders are hanging under the branches of shade trees out of the sun, since light and warmth will encourage bacteria and/or mold in any feeder, regardless of whether it's plastic or glass. Rainwater helps that along, so the downward-pointing tubes you're using keep the nectar cleaner than any other type, but aren't practical if the hummingbirds consume a gallon of sugar-water a day. In the past fifteen years, two or three 8 - 16oz feeders were plenty and uneaten nectar had to be dumped every third day or so. But I started planting more flowers last year and got the first breeding pair to take up residence. This year, with even more flowering plants, there was an unexpected population explosion. Now there are twelve feeders in the yard of seven different types/ brands and they all get used, though five are hung under what's become The Hummingbird Tree because of the crowd that prefers to feed there. They're using both rings on the Best-1 as perches:

Hey Lisa, I wouldn't worry, I am just accross the river in Windsor Ontario. I have seen hummers around here as late as the end of November and they were fine. Slowly they will all dissappear but only when they are ready to go. The fact that you have a nice fat one just means she is enjoying her stay in your yard. I still have 5 in my yard, 2 immature males and 3 females, all of which are getting more and more plump every day. My wife even noticed that they are getting fat, she said "They didn't look quite that big when they arrived here...". Enjoy her as long as you can, pretty soon we will be missing them until next spring. I hate winter. Steve

Thanks for your comment, mbrowne. I'm sure the additional feeders are affecting their behavior as well. Last year, the two feeders were guarded fiercely from a nearby wire. With 5, I'm finding one bird only guards one or two, and allows feeding at the others. I don't know if you remember my comments about timidity earlier this year--you were surprised. Well, this new mob isn't as timid, either. They'll feed if I stand motionless a few feet away, and tolerate some movement inside the house. Also I've noticed they may turn their back on me (I guess to shut out the intrusive sight of me :) Fly off only at movement, but even then come right back. All the extra acitivity is definitely worth the little bit of extra work.
