Brooklyn Galley Kitchen Finished (not white!)
Although I am not a frequent GW poster, I referred to GW throughout my kitchen renovation planning. It was thanks to GW that I have the countertop and knobs/pulls that I envisioned but thought I would never have: THANK YOU! We are absolutely loving every inch of our new kitchen! I wish we had professional photos, but alas, these will have to do.
Before: One wall of cabs and appliances (everything was falling apart) left from the prior owner and one wall of IKEA shelves/storage/counter that I designed and lived with for 4 years as we saved for our renovation. Although I liked the accessibility of the open design on the IKEA wall (and I loved the SimpleHuman trash can and recycling can), the cleaning was difficult (thankfully, my brother-in-law doesn�t mind the cleaning and that entire wall is now in his new apartment). I also had very little counter space with this old plan. I vowed that my new kitchen would have very little open wall space and next to nothing on the counters. We would also have efficient appliances (including a DW � after 12 years of hand washing) that didn�t need to be velcroed together.
After: HOORAY!
42" wall cabs: right to the ceiling; the extra space and the look are just what we wanted
I put an open shelf next to the window to keep my fruit (bottom shelves) & garlic, onions (top shelves) off the counter and to let in more light from our awkward window.
All drawer base cabs except for 30" sink, 15" trash & 9" pantry: drawers rock and have changed my life for the better. Love the pegs and double-stacked utensil storage.
Trash/Recycling: I finally figured out how to get 4 separate spaces. I had my husband cut one of the pull-out cans to fit my compost pail; one of favorite elements. Under the sink is glass/plastic on the left, paper on the right.
Spice drawer: I like my spices are right in front of me (literally) as I chop and prep. In my old kitchen, they took up counter space and were hard to clean.
Tall/Skinny Fridge: everyone should have one. It�s only been a week, but I can�t seem to fill it! I love that I can see everything.
Tall/Skinny pantry: I opted for this instead of a larger fridge. Love the storage and ease of accessibility. Still have yet to fill it.
Range/Skinny spice drawers: I am a huge Berta Fan! The spice drawers are skinny and long: perfect for cooking utensils, knife sharpeners, grill supplies, etc.
18" DW/Deep Sink/Pull-out Faucet/Sink Storage Tilt: 18" is perfect for our family of three. The sink/faucet/tilt storage: highly recommend.
Green: a color that we love and have all over our home. The pictures don�t do the colors justice (especially the counter which looks rather greyish in these photos). And in case you�re wondering, the textured porcelain tile floor feels amazing � not like other hard/cold tile that I have read about on GW (apologies for the renovation dust that is still on the floor).

Design: me (inspired by the slate fish etchings mounted on tent stakes, by the fridge, that my husband made in a printmaking class before I met him)
Timeframe: Due to a cracked cabinet (which Kraftmaid replaced � no questions asked � very easy to work with), our 3-week renovation turned into 5 weeks, but well worth it. Our contractor was amazing. The only structural change we made was to the kitchen entryway.

Finished NYC galley kitchen on a budget!

Yesterday we went out and got another white cab with open shelving and light wood top for the end of that wall - it was almost too big for the space but we managed to wedge it in there. It looks pretty close in appearance to the other two, enough that it looks fairly integrated. It looks good and will be used for the induction burner that heats the tea kettle! scrappy25 - we gave the IKEA measurements to Cabinet Authority. Unlike Semi-handmade and Scherr's, they don't keep them on file. I got the exact measurements of the fronts from IKEAfans.com. The paint is a factory finish with a very low sheen. I had an option of three whites by Sherwin Williams: Crystal White, Frosty White, and Designer White. I listed them in order by the strength of their yellow undertone, from strong to nonexistent. I went with Designer White because I wanted that stark white look. If you happen to live in NYC, I can just give you the sample color blocks since I don't need them anymore. We had to do the drilling for the fronts ourselves, except for the two doors below the sink - those got standard boring holes for the clip-on hinges. IKEAfans has the template for where the drill holes should go on the drawer fronts. It wasn't hard to do at all. Just remember to measure twice and drill once! We made one mistake and have to live with a little unevenness on a drawer front. I'm not sure what you mean by a box versus door breakdown. Do you mean drawers versus doors? We went with all drawers on one side of the galley (12 total on that side). The other side, where the sink is, got two doors under the sink and two drawers for the trash pullout (the bottom part of that cab looks like a tall door but is actually a pull out drawer). Comments (18)I had a pleasantly surprising unintended consequence to my posting early in the week. Chris from Henrybuilt contacted me after reading my posting on the forum to let me know that because of the problems I had experienced during the installation of my kitchen they had made some significant changes in staffing and in the way they do things on the east coast. Apparently they have tripled their field operations team here and have begun to keep stock here too so that some pieces can be fabricated locally and more quickly replaced if necessary. They have also changed the way they receive and delivery inventory which will hopefully prevent the damage to pieces I experienced during the delivery process. On wednesday he stopped by with one of his field operations people to swap out some hinges for me (my contractor had installed the wrong type) and they will also be providing me with "Danish Oil" which I will use on the panels closest to the sink to prevent water damage to the walnut. I am still loving it and, at the risk of sounding ridiculously self absorbed and corny, often sit in the morning, drinking my cocoa, admiring how great a jog I did! The functionality is very pleasing and the scrimps don't take away from the splurges in my eye. Definitely this kitchen suits my cooking needs, upgrades our living space tremendously but does feel down to earth and not real fancy pants. Just in time! New baby will be coming in about three months and I would be the meanest mommy ever if I had that old grimy kitchen. Would probably never put my kid down on the floor in the old kitch or DR because it was so terrible and chronically dirty. Sjerin--Re: the wall. The wall was worked into the design because we had to have it there (or two posts) for structural issues. It is holding up much of the roof. Amazingly, the hood sucks up all the grease--and we do a lot of deep frying and pan frying. I have wiped down the wall as part of rudimentary cleaning, however, it is amazingly clean/grease free! Comments (15)As others have posted you need to work with a creative designer who can give you real input into maximizing your kitchen space. In terms of your question - will not having a refrigerator in the kitchen triangle put off future buyers. First I think unless you are planning to sell in the near future, do what works for your needs. And if you are planning to sell so quickly probably don't invest any money becaue you won't get it back anyway unless you are a DIY and are able to achieve fabulous results for not much labor costs. As for functioning in YOUR kitchen, I would personally go insane if I had to retrieve refrigerated items for stuff I use often at a far distance. That said, having a secondary refrigerator in the garage or basement is pretty standard for overflow type of things like drinks or whatever. And also many people have large kitchens so that effectively the distance from the refrigerator to the prep area is further than the entire area of my kitchen. That said, I have a very small urban kitchen - original footprint was an 8' x 10" galley. I configured so that I expanded the run of my cabinets on one wall into the dining area and so what looks like a hutch/buffet actually supplies lots of kitchen storage including a utility closet. I managed to be able to fit a large sink; a 36" counter depth refrigerator as well as a wall oven. Not saying that would provide you with a solution since my solution is based on the configuration of my particular space. 7 years agoI have to confess. I had just bought a new "old" house with a walk through galley kitchen when I saw your work of genius. I love green. I copied everything (I hope you don't have your kitchen copywrited, lol) that I could possibly copy, and I can't wait till it is finished. When I first saw your kitchen article last year it did not mention what track light you used, or if it did I overlooked it. I have been searching everywhere for a track light like yours. Then this evening in desperation I googled your name on houzz.com and here you are! And here is the track light you used! Thank you for all the information!!! I'm going to copy again! My pass through galley kitchen is slightly larger than yours, I think. It has a pantry that I will never fill. I installed an outlet in the pantry and my microwave (and possibly the coffeemaker) is going in there to free up some much needed counter space. I must tell you though that when my brother and I picked up the Rosemary Caesarstone slab, and the Brazilian green? floor tile, and the American Olean celadon subway tiles he arched his eyebrows at me. (I was a little nervous also!) I flipped out my phone and showed him your kitchen and said, "Don't say a word! Alv and I know what we are doing.". lol
i do have a little secret though. I just bought the "next to last" slab of Rosemary Caesarstond in this country. In other words - I know where the last remaining slab is. Does anyone want to know? How much $$$$$? Just kidding. But the slab is (or was) there two weeks ago.
I'm going to try to attach my boring hum drum "before" kitchen.
