How did you decide....white or stained?
Comments (22)Our home is about a traditional as it gets and we went with white. Lack of natural light helped make the decision for us. It had to be a lighter colour or the room would look far too closed in. I also looked at hundreds of decorating and design magazines from many countries and at the Houzz site for a few thousand hours and was drawn to "white" kitchens more often than not. We moved the original kitchen into the (now) former family room and the original kitchen is now a butlers pantry. We couldn't move any walls, windows or doors as we bought a heritage property with restrictions on what could be done to the structure. There is also a floor to ceiling brick fireplace and cast iron bread oven in the now kitchen so a darker stain would be a bit too much for the room. I ended up with a light gray tone on the perimeter and a stone gray island for some contrast being drawn to more cooler whites than the warm ones. Regardless, only you know what you love so, as many smart people on this forum have advised many, many times, make your choices for you. It's your home so do what suits you....See Morecreamy white or white white?
Comments (26)I went with a creamier white out of not wanting it to be too stark for my space. I agree with above posters saying you need to figure out what works in your particular light and space. NEW QUESTION THOUGH - this came up this week as the painters are starting and someone above mentioned trim. For trim and molding I am not sure. The trim or molding above the cabinets is already done and of course matches the cabinets. We will also have an area of built in bookcases in the adjoining family room also in the same off=white as the kitchen cabs. We are painting the trim which is now honeyed oak. Should we match the trim to the rest of the house which is a different white than the new cabinets or to the cabinets (which is a little greyer than the house trim, neither really white white but creamy in different ways)? These rooms are set off from the others, i.e., their molding will not touch or meet EXCEPT for two doorways. I think I had decided with the painter to go with the trim color of the rest of the house - and by trim I mean windows and crown molding, with the exception of the crown above all cabinets (kitched and fam room) and also the two windows right in the kitchen smack between the cabinets. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Don't mean to hijack the post and perhaps I'll need to post independently??...See MoreCreamy white cabinets - how to coordinate wall color and ceiling color
Comments (7)I'm not a color expert, but I have 2 kitchens each with different shades of white painted cabinets, so I'll offer thoughts based on my experience. For our lake build I wanted a crisp white cottage look that would complement the blue stained island. I was planning on going with the whitest white option. My KD convinced me, as yours did, not to go with stark white. Like you, I was worried it would read creamy, but I'm glad I followed her advice. The cabs positively read clean white in the room. We did go with the stark white with the bathroom vanity and, as she had said, it lacks the richness and depth that the kitchen ones do and looks less like wood and more like a builder grade cab. We did go with a warmer shade on the walls in the open area of the kitchen and I think that helps them stand out as being more white. I wanted a completely different feel in my home and chose creamy cabinets. In both homes I have standard white ceiling paint. This is where the color experts may advise differently, but to my eye it works just fine in both spaces because the ceiling & cabs are on different planes & with the play of shadow & light the whites don't seem to fight in either case. Hope this helps as you sort it out....See MoreHow did you decide between white vs. off-white lampshades?
Comments (3)I decide by whether the lampshade is primarily seen on or off. If off then the true color of the lampshade will coordinate with whatever is around it and in my case its the furnishings (not the trim or wall color since both are white/neutral). But now I have a lampshade that when the light is off is a white linen. When the light is on it's off-white and yellowy... in the room it's viewed both on and off so even if I wanted white I'd only get it half the time....See Morerdas
