Looking for a cheap vacation...any ideas?

We have a buy one get one free deal on United airlines and are looking to go on a vacation at the end of June. We live in Portland, Oregon. We love to antique, go to historical places, etc. I like gardening, my husband loves sports. We are not outdoorsy people.

Any ideas of fun places we might visit? It would be my husband and I. We are willing to rent a car. We were thinking Boston or somewhere on the east coast.

Boston is an ideal walking city, with ample public transportation in and out of the city. Many hotels are expensive, but you can find a good hotel for around $120. Sometimes less.

I noticed that you have a son. Boston has many things for kids, including the Children's Museum, the New England Aquarium, and the Science Museum. Boston Common has a nice playground and the Frog Pond, where kids can wade. The Public Garden has the swan boats, which you can ride.

Outside of Boston, there is Salem, which is focused on the witch trials but is also a longtime maritime city. It is reachable by commuter train from Boston's North Station. Using the same train, you can also go to Gloucester - the famous fishing town - and Rockport, with lots of shops on a wide pier jutting out into the harbor.

South of Boston is Plymouth and Cape Cod. It's only 90 minutes to the start of the Cape, or you can take a ferry ride from Boston to Provincetown. West of Boston are the revolutionary war battlefields of Lexington and Concord, along with Walden Pond, made famous by Thoreau.

I did a quick search on a few places that are in Boston with reasonable prices. I know these hotels are in decent areas, but otherwise know nothing about them.

A beach house is great on Fire Island Long Island we get one every year and pay 1600.00 for monday thru Friday the house is 3 houses off the ocean and is big we stay at Ocean Beach town

I have a good friend who used the crushed stone on his driveway. Over 13 years at this house he has added stone 1 time and it dose "crush down" very well. I wouldn't want to dig it up with a shovel. It's almost like concrete. It also dose not get messy. I have also put 2 regular gravel driveways in to my 2 houses over the past 10 years. One of the houses gets a little messy but the other is nice. Yea I get some weeds but I just use weed killer every month and it keeps it under control. I'm a "weed freak" and can't stand them in the driveway. But, my friend doesn't have a problem with the little strip growing up the center. What about that big old tree? It definitely should go. It is growing too close to the house. It can get it's roots into your foundation and cause all kinds of trouble. Also your gutters are probably full of leaves which could lead to your sofit and facia getting rotted out. Trust me, I just replaced sofit and facia on my house last summer because of a tree growing too close to the house and poor drainage. It cost around $2000 in materials and I did all the work myself. Along with 3 new roofs that were ruined because of the same tree. As for your landscaping. I like your landscaping timber idea. It gives a good solid edge and can contain any mulch you put into it. Just use a treated timber for longevity. you mentioned in your other post that the area gets full sun . This gives you many options for planting here. I like peonies, iris, sedum, purple coneflower, black eyed susan, red hot pokers, and hollyhocks. These all get some nice height and are easy to maintain. I would say from a cost stand point, purchase some perennial seeds from Walmart and try starting things that you like on your own. Here is where $20.00 can go a long way. Walmart also has a "wild flower" annual mix that you just spread out over the area you want some color. This is very quick and easy and only requires a little watering. And, can be done in an area you want to "color" but don't have the planting budget.There are plenty of people here that can help you get started. You may want to visit a nursery for a few (4 or 5) plants that can start you out. Any time you are building a garden on a shoe string budget, it starts out small.

Ideas for a big bowl planter cheap?

I saw a show on TV a long time ago that took those giant stainless silver bowls that you have in your kitchen where 10 bowls fit in one. You know the ones. They sprayed the biggest bowl with pam cooking spray (so the concrete wouldn't stick to it) - then put concrete in the bowl maybe 1/3 full and then put one of the other bowls (sprayed in pam on the outside) inside the other bowl and concrete and squished the concrete up the sides of the big bowl till it reached the top. He then put a bunch of rocks or bricks in the little bowl to keep it weighed down and let the concrete set for a while (NOT fully) but enough so that the concrete would keep its shape when you remove the two bowls.

Ok, here are some pictures of my ugo-ugly bathroom. It was tough because its such a small area to actually get a picture of something I'd have to be out of the room! :) Here is the shower - the tile is in excellent shape and the tub is in great shape but the gray is ugo-ugly and the tile is worse. I will be removing the shower door (Yuck!). Here's the ugo tile: Again, I would like to have these resurfaced or something - because the tile is in good shape! But I would like some feed back if anyone has had experience with any of those resurfacing people/companyies (like Miracle Method). Here's the floor - the linoleum circa 1974! Glitter and all! Here's the light fixture as a bonus! Look at that thang! Las Vegas has nothing on this cabinet - IN LIGHTS!!! This is the bathroom from the door: shower is off to the left. Vanity - not too bad, but I'd like to update the counter top. And now the kicker - Help!! :)

Not every copper sink the comes out of Mexico is cheap. I've never heard anyone say that. Mexico has plenty of vendors who are true artists, sell high quality products and care deeply about the quality of the product they sell. Just like in the U.S., there are also those who will, knowingly or not, sell products that are going to perform poorly because of poor construction, workmanship and/or materials. As consumers, our job is to research the best we can and make the best decisions we can for ourselves. I'd hardly call a $1000 sink cheap either. It is a big investment, especially when you consider how difficult it can be to replace a sink if you're not happy with it. If it were me, and I was set on keeping my copper sink shiny, I'd purchase a piece of copper and treat it or seal it with whatever product/s I was considering. Then I'd toss it in the bottom of my kitchen sink and see for myself how well the product used to seal it performs. That gives you a chance to see if it is something you think you'll be happy with before making the commitment. Copper is going to want to patina so you're going to want to make sure you know what you're getting into. The feedback is ebay is great and sounds like people are really happy with his product upon receipt. He gives you 14 days to return it if you're not happy with it but it will cost you a 10% restocking fee plus shipping. He doesn't mention any kind of warranty. Good luck! New York City can't be beat. Whatever negative things you may have heard in years gone by don't apply in my opinion. I've reacquainted myself with it because my daughter left the Seattle area to attend NYU. It's truly amazing and welcoming.

My second choice would be New Orleans. Between the food, the culture, and the architecture, it's the closest you can get to foreign travel while still staying in the U.S.!

Charleston has revolutionary war and civil war history. It's a beautiful southern city, has great indigenous food and the historic district is walkable.

Consider Williamsburg too. great city but maybe packed in summer.

I also agree that NYC cant be beat. rooms are less expensive in august as the natives leave for the beach, public transportaion is sublime and you go back as early as american history gets.

I just returned from a trip to Philadelphia with my children and it was fabulous. I can't wait to return with my DH. We spent 5 days there and it wasn't nearly enough time. The historical sites were great, the food is incredible, the city is gorgeous and it is packed full of artwork (murals, sculptures, etc.) and music. Most of it is free or costs very little. We did the guided bus tour (unlimited 24 hour pass that you can hop on and off at various stops as much as you want) and loved it. We did the bus tour several times in that 24 hours because each tour guide told us something different about the town. We were expecting to enjoy the typical historical sites (the Liberty Bell, Betsy Ross House, etc.), but also found several other interesting sites to tour like the Eastern State Penitentiary (built in 1820's and used until 1970's), Mutter Museum, and a tour of China Town complete with a tour of a fortune cookie factory. The Reading Terminal Market was a delicious place to go, as was many other restaurants we tried. If your DH is a sports nut, he'll love a baseball game there this summer. Their doing pretty good right. And, then there's always those awesome cheesesteaks.

well I would suggest a few things for a cheap vacation idea. but my cheapest idea would be a nice family camping vacation. its fun, relaxing, and very inexpensive. camp grounds usually charge an average of 15 dollars a night.

I suggest going to Philippines in Boracay. Very beautiful beach. You can find cheap affordable hotels and resorts there.
